Memory Alpha

[edit]

The procedure listed for Memory Alpha leads to Error 404 messages. --Khajidha (talk) 12:08, 23 July 2014 (EDT)

I think I can fix that when I have some time. --abates (talk) 16:59, 23 July 2014 (EDT)
All fixed! --abates (talk) 02:41, 24 July 2014 (EDT)
Thanks, abates! --Khajidha (talk) 07:02, 24 July 2014 (EDT)
I hate to think how many interwiki aliases we have actually still work. The IMDB one surprisingly still does even though they haven't used that URL format in years. --abates (talk) 08:05, 24 July 2014 (EDT)

Linking to wikias

[edit]

Given the changeover to Fandom, should we update our interwiki linking format? I know I saw a discussion about this somewhere before, but I'm not sure where it was, how to find it, or how it turned out. --Khajidha (talk) 10:21, 30 July 2019 (EDT)

It's actually been done already. Even when using "wikia:", the link itself now goes to the Fandom URL. -- Cyberlink420 (talk) 11:08, 30 July 2019 (EDT)
Shouldn't we change it to "fandom:" though? There may be fandom wikis that never were "wikia" and future users of this site may be confused as to why we are using the term since they may well have never seen it. Leaving it as "wikia:" seems about as odd as making the interwiki link to Wikipedia be something like "nupedia:". --Khajidha (talk) 11:52, 30 July 2019 (EDT)
Maybe not as a full replacement, mostly because I don't want to have to manually change thousands of pre-existing links, but definitely as an additional option. -- Cyberlink420 (talk) 12:19, 30 July 2019 (EDT)
I'd say add the "fandom:" version as the new norm to be used going forward and deprecate new usages of "wikia:". I wouldn't mandate changing all the old ones en masse, but if somebody wanted to go through and change them, I wouldn't stop them. --Khajidha (talk) 12:32, 30 July 2019 (EDT)
PS - the text on the actual page here should definitely be changed to "linking to an article on Wikipedia, a Fandom wiki, or other wiki in general". A note explaining the Fandom/Wikia bit would be necessary, too. ---Khajidha (talk) 12:34, 30 July 2019 (EDT)
Text changed accordingly. It's a shame Deceptitran isn't active anymore; we could probably save a lot of time by letting it update everything for us. -- Cyberlink420 (talk) 12:50, 30 July 2019 (EDT)
It's easy enough to add in a new "fandom" interwiki, though that would mean should we ever need to create an article with a title starting "Fandom:", we wouldn't be able to. Not sure how likely that is, but unlike "wikia:" I would guess there's a non-zero chance of it happening. --abates (talk) 16:46, 30 July 2019 (EDT)
Would the presence of the existing fandom article affect things at all? -- Cyberlink420 (talk) 17:00, 30 July 2019 (EDT)
Shouldn't affect things either way. It has to have a colon to be treated as an interwiki. --abates (talk) 17:14, 30 July 2019 (EDT)
I have added an interwiki under the name fandom (E.G. fandom:tardis:TARDIS) --abates (talk) 02:27, 31 July 2019 (EDT)
So do we update this page to show the use of the fandom interwiki and state that the wikia form still works, but is not to be used in new occurences? --Khajidha (talk) 14:13, 3 August 2019 (EDT)
Good idea. I've updated the text accordingly. -- Cyberlink420 (talk) 15:03, 3 August 2019 (EDT)
