Jed, Sammy, and Allan went to an empty train yard to play Space Wars, though Jed had to take his sister along to babysit her. The game was off to a good start for Jed, as he managed to "kill" Sammy. His victory was interrupted by Robin complaining that she wanted to go home, earning him stink-eye and complaints from his other playmates. While everyone else made a big hubbub about the incident, Jed snuck off, and his best "police officer" voice, yelled to the rest of the group that they were under arrest for trespassing. The others caught on immediately, leading them to not believe Jed when he spotted a police car driving by. Once the vehicle came into view, the whole gang quickly hid themselves beneath a train car. As they began to sneak away, Jed spotted a motorcycle with no rider. The other kids thought he was playing another joke, so they followed him to call his fib.

Blaster, who had been mode locked and deposited in a nearby drainage pipe, was then discovered by Sammy. The tape deck spoke, which freaked out Sammy and sent him to the other children. Jed, incredulous, accused Sammy of lying when he reported his discovery. Robin, in turn, calmly found Blaster, and presented him to the other children, which allowed him to display his speaking abilities to all of them.

A nearby battle between Bruticus and Defensor then came within visual range of the children, scaring them witless. Jed's fright, however, soon turned into enthrallment, as the clash surpassed anything his young mind had been able to imagine until then. He still was against removing Blaster's mode lock upon the Autobot's request for them to do so, but the choice was taken out of his hands when Allan went ahead and obeyed the robot against everyone else's wishes. The four children found themselves staring up at yet another giant robot, though Blaster assured them that he meant them no harm.

To fool Bruticus, who had defeated Defensor, into believing that Blaster had no loyalty to the Autobots, Blaster and the children put on a show where Blaster "shot" Sammy and Jed burst into tears for his fallen friend. The distraction allowed Blaster to put Bruticus out of commission, and Blaster received permission from the Protectobots to escort the children to safety.

The children, seeing Blast Off inert, convinced Blaster to accompany them into space by mode locking Blast Off and using him as their vehicle. But as they flew up into orbit, Jed noticed another spaceship, the Ark. It was decidedly hostile to Blast Off, and begun shooting at them. Child's Play

Blaster, realizing the danger he was putting the children in, was about to surrender to Grimlock, but Sammy selflessly tossed Blaster out of the space shuttle, away from the Autobots. The kids were taken into Wheeljack's custody and outfitted with spacesuits. They were then brought before Grimlock, who deemed them guilty of helping the traitorous Blaster and sentenced them to death. In reality, this was a ruse to draw out Blaster, who would be compelled to save the children. Just as they were sent drifting into space, they were suddenly swallowed by Sky Lynx, who was saving them on Wheeljack's behalf. Sky Lynx attempted to escape the pursuing Dinobots, but it took Blaster giving himself up to ensure the children's safety. Spacehikers!

The Spacehikers were allowed to be transported by Sky Lynx back to Earth, but when they received a broadcast advertising the Cosmic Carnival, the kids begged to go. Sky Lynx obliged. There, they were delighted by the spectacles, but Berko, working for Big Top, demanded payment for the group. When their supplies of various currencies came up short, Sky Lynx and the children were forced to become part of the circus, working towards some undefined debt. Jed was forced to bat baseballs among other "tricks" for the amusement of slack-jawed aliens.

Optimus Prime and his band of Autobots were attracted to the Cosmic Carnival by yet another advertisement, this time featuring Sky Lynx. Happening upon the children's enclosure, Optimus became enraged that they were being held against their will. Jed was especially vocal about wanting to escaping, kicking a skateboard towards Berko in an act of futile rebellion. Recognizing Optimus's resemblance to their previous Autobot friends, Jed and his friends rushed to him and begged for his help. Though at first it seemed that the Autobots were unwilling to go against the legal contract binding the children to their enslavement, they eventually came through. Goldbug broke the kids out with help from a repentant Berko. Despite some interference from Big Top and his circus gang, the children and Sky Lynx were able to escape in the Steelhaven. The boys then happily played some basketball to pass the time on the journey home. The Cosmic Carnival

Sky Lynx returned the children to California, where their parents were waiting for them alongside reporters and a crowd of concerned citizens. Though the reunion started out pleasantly, Jed and his friends were brushed aside to get them to safety as the crowd became hostile. They were all saddened to see Sky Lynx being forced to leave by anti-robot activists. Monstercon from Mars!
