Joe had previously taken measures to protect his home from criminals, but after the Decepticon invasion of Earth, he was at a loss as to how to defend his loved ones against the Transformer threat. He began visiting the message board of the anti-Transformer group Earth's Children and, through connections on their site, acquired an energy gun powerful enough to injure one of the aliens. Little did he know, however, that by buying the gun he had become a pawn in a Decepticon plot. The weapon contained a small piece of Megatron's consciousness, which connected to other machines in Joe's house and began speaking to him when nobody else was around, urging him to use the gun. Joe initially unplugged the devices, but his curiosity quickly got the better of him, and he began listening to the voice. Megatron fed him lies that he was a scientist from another planet which had been destroyed by the Transformers, and that Earth was their next target. By the time humanity learned that the Autobots had been allied with the US government for some time, Joe had completely fallen for Megatron's lies. Following the voice's instructions, he traveled to the Skywatch base where Bumblebee was telling rioting humans that the Autobots had come in peace. Convinced that the Autobots were out to destroy humanity and that he was doing the right thing, Joe pulled out the gun and shot Bumblebee in the chest. Altered Carbon All My Sins Remembered

He was subsequently restrained and put into Skywatch custody, sparking riots amongst other humans who shared his opinions. His assassination attempt was fortunately unsuccessful, though Bumblebee was heavily damaged and left on life support. The Demolished Man
