John Tomlinson is a British comics designer, editor and, in his alternate mode of Steve Alan, writer.

He served as designer for Marvel Comics UK's The Transformers from issue #22 until issue #120.<ref>Unknown author "Transformation: Designer genius (well sort of) opts out!" in The Transformers #178 London; Marvel Comics, 1988), page 2.</ref> Ian Rimmer asked him to create the entire look of the comic: the fonts, the page layouts, and the graphic borders. Almost all of the visual style was down to Tomlinson, as Hasbro had yet to provide the company with much style material.<ref>The Transformers Classics UK Volume 1, page 13-14</ref>

One of his earliest jobs was to help produce the dummy copies of #1, which he put off until the last second and so had to spray-mount fifty covers at once... without realising he had to at least open the window if he was going to try that, and when nobody else was in the office. In his own words, he was "dancing on the desk, singing, completely off my face" due to the fog of chemical fumes and was lucky to not be an "expertly mounted corpse"!<ref>The Transformers Classics UK Volume 1 page 10</ref>

He left to replace Furman as editor on Thundercats, which he got after letting his bosses know Fleetway were headhunting him for another comic.<ref>The Transformers Classics UK Volume 4, page 10-11</ref>

Having noticed the preponderance of successful people called "Steve" or "Alan" in the comics industry, he opted to combine the two names as a pseudonym. In this capacity, he scripted "Destiny of the Dinobots!"

His other notable comics work includes a stint on 2000 AD, serving as the editor of that title from 1994 until 1996 and also editing Judge Dredd Megazine in 1996, and working on Knights of Pendragon with chums Dan Abnett and Steve White.
