Masami ÅŒbari

Masami Ōbari (大張正己 Ōbari Masami, born January 24, 1966) is a Japanese character designer, animation director and overall artist known primarily for his work on mecha-related anime productions. As a director, some of his work includes Super Robot Wars OG: The Inspector, Fatal Fury: The Motion Picture, and episodes 5 and 6 of the original Bubblegum Crisis. As a mecha designer, some of his work includes Dancouga, Gravion, and Super Robot Wars. He originally worked for Ashi Productions and later formed his own studio, Studio G-1 (later known as Studio G-1 Neo). He was an animator on almost every Brave show (except Goldran, Dagwon, and GaoGaiGar). He was also a member of Studio OX.
According to Pioneer's Fight! Super Robot Lifeform Transformers laserdisc box set booklet,<ref>http://www.tfrid.com/pictures/Autobot/Autobot1.JPG</ref> Ōbari made his professional debut on The Transformers, directing and animating Optimus Prime's transformation sequence. Rather than animating Optimus's usual stock footage transformation sequence used in numerous episodes, however, he would confirm that what he worked on was the highly stylized transformation sequence seen twice during the episode "More than Meets the Eye, Part 3".<ref>{{#if: @tfwiki —|}}{{#if: https://twitter.com/G1_BARI/status/1190542458871934978 |Masami Ōbari|Masami Ōbari}}{{#if: Twitter |, Twitter|}}{{#if: |, ""|}}{{#if: 2019 |, 2019{{#if: 11 |/{{#switch:{{#len:11}}|1=011|11}}{{#if: 2|/{{#switch:{{#len:2}}|1=02|2}}|}}}}|}}{{#if: https://twitter.com/G1_BARI/status/1190542458871934978 ||}}{{#switch:{{#sub:https://twitter.com/G1_BARI/status/1190542458871934978%7C7%7C11}}%7Cweb.archive= (archive link)|}}{{#switch:{{#sub:https://twitter.com/G1_BARI/status/1190542458871934978%7C8%7C11}}%7Cweb.archive= (archive link)|}}{{#switch:{{#sub:https://twitter.com/G1_BARI/status/1190542458871934978%7C7%7C10}}%7Carchive.is= (archive link)|}}{{#switch:{{#sub:https://twitter.com/G1_BARI/status/1190542458871934978%7C8%7C10}}%7Carchive.is= (archive link)|}}{{#if: | (dead link)}}</ref> He mentioned on Twitter that while working on the sequence, he was given no instruction on what to do with the trailer, so he had to make it up.<ref>{{#if: 昔、コンボイの変形シーンの原画を描いた時、コンテナをどうするか悩んだなぁ…結局、何となくしれーっとフレームアウトさせたんだけど(^ω^; |"昔、コンボイの変形シーンの原画を描いた時、コンテナをどうするか悩んだなぁ…結局、何となくしれーっとフレームアウトさせたんだけど(^ω^;"—|}}{{#if: https://twitter.com/G1_BARI/status/234719368322363393 |Masami Ōbari|Masami Ōbari}}{{#if: Twitter |, Twitter|}}{{#if: |, ""|}}{{#if: 2012 |, 2012{{#if: 8 |/{{#switch:{{#len:8}}|1=08|8}}{{#if: 12|/{{#switch:{{#len:12}}|1=012|12}}|}}}}|}}{{#if: https://twitter.com/G1_BARI/status/234719368322363393 ||}}{{#switch:{{#sub:https://twitter.com/G1_BARI/status/234719368322363393%7C7%7C11}}%7Cweb.archive= (archive link)|}}{{#switch:{{#sub:https://twitter.com/G1_BARI/status/234719368322363393%7C8%7C11}}%7Cweb.archive= (archive link)|}}{{#switch:{{#sub:https://twitter.com/G1_BARI/status/234719368322363393%7C7%7C10}}%7Carchive.is= (archive link)|}}{{#switch:{{#sub:https://twitter.com/G1_BARI/status/234719368322363393%7C8%7C10}}%7Carchive.is= (archive link)|}}{{#if: | (dead link)}}</ref> He also states on Twitter that aside from doing the transformation sequence, he helped design Megatron's spaceship, possibly one seen early on in the series.<ref>{{#if: 自分がコンボイの変形の原画描いたり、メガトロンの宇宙船のデザインやった事って、あまり知られてないでしょ( ̄ω ̄) |"自分がコンボイの変形の原画描いたり、メガトロンの宇宙船のデザインやった事って、あまり知られてないでしょ( ̄ω ̄)"—|}}{{#if: https://twitter.com/G1_BARI/status/467316632897863681 |Masami Ōbari|Masami Ōbari}}{{#if: Twitter |, Twitter|}}{{#if: |, ""|}}{{#if: 2014 |, 2014{{#if: 5 |/{{#switch:{{#len:5}}|1=05|5}}{{#if: 16|/{{#switch:{{#len:16}}|1=016|16}}|}}}}|}}{{#if: https://twitter.com/G1_BARI/status/467316632897863681 ||}}{{#switch:{{#sub:https://twitter.com/G1_BARI/status/467316632897863681%7C7%7C11}}%7Cweb.archive= (archive link)|}}{{#switch:{{#sub:https://twitter.com/G1_BARI/status/467316632897863681%7C8%7C11}}%7Cweb.archive= (archive link)|}}{{#switch:{{#sub:https://twitter.com/G1_BARI/status/467316632897863681%7C7%7C10}}%7Carchive.is= (archive link)|}}{{#switch:{{#sub:https://twitter.com/G1_BARI/status/467316632897863681%7C8%7C10}}%7Carchive.is= (archive link)|}}{{#if: | (dead link)}}</ref>

[edit]Notes
[edit]- It was once speculated that Ōbari had directed the full episode "Call of the Primitives".<ref>[[wikipedia:{{#if:ja|ja:}}大張正己#演出、監督、作画監督、各種デザインなど|{{#if:Masami Ōbari at Japanese Wikipedia|Masami Ōbari at Japanese Wikipedia|大張正己#演出、監督、作画監督、各種デザインなど}}]]</ref> However, Ōbari was asked on Twitter regarding the episode and he himself did not know! This led to animator Eiji Suganuma chiming in<ref>{{#if: @G1_BARI @tf__tf @samehada00 確かな記憶じゃないんですが、橙色のロボは松尾さんが原画で… (´Д`)"—|}}{{#if: https://twitter.com/LandSoda/status/487278887332638721 |Eiji Suganuma|Eiji Suganuma}}{{#if: Twitter |, Twitter|}}{{#if: |, ""|}}{{#if: 2014 |, 2014{{#if: 7 |/{{#switch:{{#len:7}}|1=07|7}}{{#if: 10|/{{#switch:{{#len:10}}|1=010|10}}|}}}}|}}{{#if: https://twitter.com/LandSoda/status/487278887332638721 ||}}{{#switch:{{#sub:https://twitter.com/LandSoda/status/487278887332638721%7C7%7C11}}%7Cweb.archive= (archive link)|}}{{#switch:{{#sub:https://twitter.com/LandSoda/status/487278887332638721%7C8%7C11}}%7Cweb.archive= (archive link)|}}{{#switch:{{#sub:https://twitter.com/LandSoda/status/487278887332638721%7C7%7C10}}%7Carchive.is= (archive link)|}}{{#switch:{{#sub:https://twitter.com/LandSoda/status/487278887332638721%7C8%7C10}}%7Carchive.is= (archive link)|}}{{#if: | (dead link)}}</ref> to say that in fact he was the animation director for the episode and to explain that the money shot of the combined Predaking was animated by Shin Matsuo (a different Studio OX artist).
- He went to the same high school as Satoshi Urushihara, and it was Urushihara who inspired Obari to become an animator.
- Obari helped pioneer the Brave Perspective/Sunrise Stance, a popular sword pose which has been homaged and referenced in countless anime, including Optimus and Galvatron's final battle in Transformers: Cybertron (Great Exkaiser screenshot on the right was not drawn by Obari).
- Some of his frequent collaborators include Munetaka Abe and Masahiro Yamane.
