Photon missile

Photon missiles are Cybertronian weapons of mass destruction that are usually wielded by city-states, though it is not unknown for a single Transformer to carry them.

Marvel The Transformers comics

Events from the UK-only comic stories are in italics.

In missile trailer mode, the Combaticon Onslaught could launch photon missiles with a range of 6500 miles. Each missile contained three independently targetable shells, each of which has an explosive force equivalent to 3000 tons of TNT. Onslaught's Universe profile

As the population of Cybertron grew and the planet faced an unprecedented energy crisis, the reign of the Overlords was becoming untenable and the once-unified society began to fragment into a number of competing city-states, some of which possessed photon missiles as the "ultimate deterrent" against rival territories slipping into open war. After saboteurs from Vos destroyed a vital power plant in Tarn, the two city-states slipped into open war and simultaneously launched their photon missiles at each other, leading to the destruction of both. Subsequently, Megatron was able to convince many of the surviving refugees to join his fledgeling Decepticon movement. State Games

Watching the newly arrived Trypticon laying waste to the Autobots outside the Ark, Sludge admired his skill in launching a photon missile. King of the Hill!

During the Autobot-Decepticon war Shockwave was ordered to take command of the newly conquered city state Tarn, whence he went on to conquer Vos. He quelled dissent in both cities by requesting Vos' Air Commanders photon missile strike Tarn, for which he claimed the Autobots were responsible, and then had a photon missile strike (of supposedly unknown origin) ordered on Vos, killing the Air Commanders whose true loyalty lay with Starscream. Toys

[edit]

The Transformers

[edit]
  • Jetfire (Autobot Air Guardian, 1985)
  • Accessories: photon missile launcher, rifle mounting pod, turbo thruster booster pack, 2 leg guards (left & right), 2 arm guards, 2 fenders
A redeco of the Takatoku Toys Macross VF-1S Super Valkyrie, Transformers Jetfire came with a large rifle, identified as a photon missile launcher in his instructions. Additionally, his packaging bio states that he carries four particle-beam cannons and heat-seeking photon missiles.

  • Accessories: sonic stun gun, double-barreled turret, chest shield, ramp, Bruticus's head, left & right fists, left & right foot stands
According to Onslaught's packaging bio, he could launch photon missiles in vehicle mode.
This toy was also included in a Bruticus giftset, available only in Japan and Italy. It was also redecoed to make Great Cannon and Mega-Octane.

Generation 2

[edit]
  • Onslaught (Combaticon, 1993)
  • Accessories: weapon, double-barreled weapon, missile launcher, 2 missiles, chest shield, ramp, Bruticus's head, left & right fists, left & right foot stands
Generation 2 Onslaught's packaging bio confirmed that he still launched photon missiles, although this time the toy came with an additional missile launcher and missiles. Whether these were intended to represent photon missiles is unknown.

Revenge of the Fallen

[edit]
  • Photon Missile Jetfire (Fast Action Battler, 2009)
  • Accessories: photon missile
Appropriately enough, Fast Action Battlers Photon Missile Jetfire came with a photon missile accessory.

Notes

[edit]
  • Generation 1 Jetfire's Marvel Universe profile ignored the "photon" part of his packaging bio's "heat-seeking photon missiles", generically calling them "heat-seeking armor-piercing missiles" instead. For whatever reason, his Dreamwave More than Meets the Eye profile replaced them with "heat-seeking proton missiles".
  • Trypticon's packaging bio and Universe profile arm him with photon launchers; it's only Sludge's offhand comment in "King of the Hill!" that might suggest that they are photon missile launchers.
