The Pine Barrens are a forested region in New Jersey.

The Decepticons created a facility here, planning to convert hundreds of regular cars into drone warriors. However, the Autobot Tracks and his friend Raoul followed them by having Tracks disguise himself as one of the stolen cars. After almost getting slagged in the facility, Tracks escaped into the wilderness. Tracks was rescued by his fellow Autobots, who then engaged in full scale assault, destroying the facility. As Optimus Prime rescued Sam Witwicky from the Broadwater Metal Works foundry, he took Sam away from population centers and headed for the Pine Barrens. Sure enough, Megatron followed, and attacked Optimus. Forced to release Sam, Optimus and Megatron immediately started slugging it out. At first, Optimus dominated the fight, relentlessly striking Megatron and trashing talking his old rival. Megatron called for his Decepticons, and Starscream and Grindor arrived. Starscream immediately began chasing Sam, and the boy was somehow able to outrun both Starscream and Megatron until Optimus began running interference. Tackling Megatron and grabbing Starscream from behind, he suplexed the flying Decepticon and kicked off part of his mouth.

Some distance away, the rest of the Autobots were heading at full speed for Optimus's position, and were running out of time.

As the battle continued, Megatron told Optimus that there was another source of Energon on Earth, and that Sam could lead them to it. Optimus gave no answer as the Decepticons continued to lay into him, with Grindor and Starscream slicing into him with their respective saw weapons, until Megatron slammed Optimus into the ground and kicked him in the face so hard it shattered his mouthplate. Starscream then opened up with a little artillery before Megatron sent him flying with a blast from his fusion cannon.

As the Decepticons advanced on the injured Autobot leader, Megatron asked Optimus if the boy was worth the future of the Transformers, but Optimus knew that deep down, he'd never stop at one. Unsheathing both of his swords, Optimus charged the Decepticons. Not only did he hold his own, he was actually winning, slicing and dicing Starscream and Grindor, cutting off the latter's arm before Megatron charged him. Managing to catch his incoming kick with his sword, Optimus repeatedly stabbed Megatron before taking on Starscream and ripping off his arm, using it as club. After dispatching Starscream, Optimus jabbed a hook into Grindor's optical sensor and pulled himself on top of the larger Decepticon. Jabbing another hook in, Optimus proceeded to tear his head apart.

As Optimus then tried to find Sam, Megatron came up from behind and stabbed Optimus through the back with his sword, then shot him point blank with his fusion cannon. As Optimus fell, he urged Sam to run before finally going off line. As Sam fled, the other Autobots arrived and managed to drive off Megatron and Starscream, allowing Sam to escape. Later, Major Lennox received a message from the Autobots: the battle had not gone well, and Optimus Prime was dead. Revenge of the Fallen
