Sector Seven discovered strange energy readings from various vehicles and forms of technology all across the globe, so the organization commissioned Project: Black Knife to investigate. They discovered Cyberglyphics inscribed on ancient ruins across the planet, raising the possibility that there may be aliens lying inert on the planet. However, this evidence was deemed inconclusive the project ceased operation, as Sector Seven switched its focus onto other classified research.

Years later, Agent Seymour Simmons begged Sector Seven to continue their research into Project: Black Knife, but his superiors considered it little more than an irrational obsession. Before Sector Seven was shut down, Simmons obtained as much research as he could, including the files related to Project: Black Knife, which proved useful in aiding Sam's later search for the Matrix of Leadership.
