Rare crystal

The "rare crystals" are a substance yet unknown to humans. Found in the jungles of South America, those crystals can be imbued with artificial intelligence and placed in robotic bodies to create Transformers.

The rare crystals appeared exclusively in the UK portion of the Marvel Comics continuity.

The Decepticons, led by Megatron, discovered the crystals and established a fortress in the image of Megatron's base at Cybertron. Under the fortress was a mining shaft where the crystals could be harvested with human labor. With the crystals, Megatron planned to create an army of Decepticon warriors.

An expedition team, containing Doctor John Butler, came across the operation and were taken hostage. Butler escaped, despite Ravage's efforts, and his rescue alerted the Autobots to the Decepticon presence in the South American jungles. When the Autobots found the fortress and crashed the operation, Megatron had his forces retreat while leaving behind a bomb to destroy the fortress. Hunted!
