He is best known for the work he produced during the late 1970s and early 1980s, but returned to fame several times before his death. In 1980, his opening act was Prince.

His song "Super Freak" was used in the film Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, but did not appear on Revenge of the Fallen: The Album.
