Roger Carel, art name of Roger Bancharel (August 14, 1927 - September 11, 2020) was a French actor.

Prolific actor and major voice of dubbing in France, he is notably known for having dubbed many mythical characters such as C-3PO (in every Star Wars-related media between 1977 and 2015), Mickey Mouse, ALF, Winnie the Pooh, Wally Gator, Mister Magoo, Captain Caveman, Kermit the frog, Benny Hill or Hercule Poirot.

He dubbed Charlie Chaplin in most of his films. Fun fact, Charlie Chaplin asked Roger Carel to be his French voice in The Great Dictator because he heard his voice and appreciated it immediately. Classy.

He also worked a ton of animated films, and a lot of Disney productions, being the French voice of numerous characters (especially mouses and snakes) including Jiminy Cricket in Pinocchio, Timothy in Dumbo, Jock in Lady and the Tramp, Pongo in One Hundred and One Dalmatians, Kaa in the Jungle Book, Roquefort in The Aristocats, Sir Hiss in Robin Hood, Basil in The Great Mouse Detective, Bernard in The Rescuers Down Under, Pétrie in the The Land Before Time films...

He has also been the official regular voice of Asterix in every single animated film and videogame between 1967 and 2014. He also voiced Maestro in the different Il était une fois... series.

Very well known and respected in the field of voice acting, his fellow comedians active in dubbing affectionately nicknamed him "the pope of dubbing".

Notes

[edit]
  • The European French dub of the original cartoon was very casual about maintaining voice continuity for the characters. It is well illustrated by the fact that Roger Carel surely was in the studio this day to probably work on another series, and came to dub a few characters in The Transformers just for one episode, like Gérard Hernandez and Patrick Préjean did.
  • Another possibility is that he was cast on the characters of Beachcomber and Inferno, who make their first screen appearances here, planning to make him their regular voice. Unfortunately, Carel did not return for the next episodes for some reason. Georges Atlas will take over the role of Beachcomber and Henry Djanik that of Inferno for their next appearances.
  • When he was about to retire, Carel himself chose his friend Jean-Claude Donda, who has a similar voice, to take over his roles. Thereby, Donda became the new regular voice of most of Carel's characters, like C-3PO, Asterix, Winnie the Pooh and Maestro. Accordingly, it's also Donda who re-dubs the short extract of ALF that we can see in the Bumblebee movie.
