The character write-up should, in theory, be continuity-neutral. We push that from time to time, since some portrayals are much more prominent than others, so there is some gray area. In regards to Hearts of Steel Gears - it's been awhile since I read HoS, but I always thought that his alt mode was the coal cart that appears as part of the autobot train, rather than a boxcart.
