Talk:Nine Great Demon Generals
Nine Great DEMON Generals? Where the hell did that come from? Shouldn't that be Decepticon Generals?—The preceding unsigned comment was added by 84.248.70.84 (talk • contribs).
- You might like to read the note on the translation of the name under Notes at the bottom of the article. :) - Chris McFeely 22:29, 14 March 2007 (UTC)
- "魔" on its own is often used within compound kanji to mean "Demonic" or "Demon" as an adjective, so unless someone authoritative has actually said there was supposed to be a pun there, I really don't think there was..."Mashou" is also "devilishness", the quality (noun) of being devilish, so this just feels incorrect to me. A straight translation would give you "Nine" (九) "Great" (大) "Demon[ic]" (魔) "Generals" (将軍), no fuss about alleged puns needed.KrytenKoro 01:04, 24 March 2013 (EDT)
- Also, "悪霊" could just be the one-word-translation "Wraith".KrytenKoro 01:04, 24 March 2013 (EDT)

Changes
[edit]Allright, with regard to the changes I've made...
- No, the English titles don't all match what Hydra used. If I made a change, it was because I thought it was more accurate; though, conversely, if I made any of them too literal, well, I'm open to suggestions on how to change 'em.
- I got rid of the "maybe everybody died and they were brought back to life" theory because it always struck me as incredibly counter-intuitive, and is not supported in the-story-as-we-know-it. Granted, not all of the Zone story pages are translated yet, but I'm willing to bet we won't get any big revelations on this matter.
- The concept of separating out the Zone OVA and story pages/manga: on the subject of the translation of the Zone story pages, it appears that they take place in a separate continuity from the lone OVA. Generals who died in the OVA continue to show up in the story pages chronologically after they've died. Admittedly, Devastator ALSO continues to show up, despite the fact he fell into lava in the manga like he did in the OVA... still, I think the story pages mesh with the manga better, if only because they were put out through the same magazine. Willing to discuss this, certainly.
(The Zone OVA should probably get its own page under the title "Enter the new Supreme Commander, Dai Atlas!", assuming I got the title right... it's not just called "Zone", in any case.) --Monzo 15:37, 8 December 2007 (UTC)
Transliteration
[edit]I'm confused here. In the individual titles, mashogun is given as the transliteration, but 将軍 is just shogun, so where does the ma come from? Interrobang 17:15, 8 December 2007 (UTC)
- Ah. Double-checking, it appears the individual titles don't actually have ma in them. I'll adjust accordingly. --Monzo 23:35, 8 December 2007 (UTC)
Army of the Nine Great Demon Generals
[edit]Is it weird that I want to list the forty-some individual Decepticons that constitute the Nine Great Demon Generals? FireChief420 (talk) 13:39, 24 June 2020 (EDT)
