Page move
[edit]Considering that we have Scavenger (Universe Ultra) and Scavenger (Universe Micromaster), shouldn't this page have remained at Scavenger (Universe 2008)? --Khajidha (talk) 10:29, 22 August 2014 (EDT)
- No, because that's an inconsistent disambig (unless you wanted to move the others to (Universe 2003 Whatever). I take your point though, which is why I moved this to (Universe Mini-Con) - I was looking for pages that had (Universe 2003) and/or (Universe 2008), but no (Universe) pointing to (disambiguation)! - SanityOrMadness (talk) 13:04, 22 August 2014 (EDT)
- ....But it's not part of the same Universe toyline as the other two. Escargon (talk) 13:06, 22 August 2014 (EDT)
- Well, if you want to move every single (Universe) to (Universe 2003) or (Universe 2008) [or (Universe 2003 Whatever)/(Universe 2008 Whatever)], be my guest. - SanityOrMadness (talk) 13:26, 22 August 2014 (EDT)
- The way I understand it is: Universe if the name is only used in one of the two Universe franchises, then Universe 2003/2008 if there is no duplication within that franchise, and further description for duplication within one of the Universes. Universe Ultra, Universe Micromaster, and Universe 2008 may not be consistent with each other, but they are consistent with this guideline. Personally, I think we SHOULD specify the year for all Universe disambigs, but consensus has always been against me. --Khajidha (talk) 13:35, 22 August 2014 (EDT)
- Well, that's nominally arguing for (Universe 2003 Ultra) and (Universe 2003 Micromaster).
- Personally though, I'm absolutely with you on that last sentence... - SanityOrMadness (talk) 13:45, 22 August 2014 (EDT)
- I am in favor of those if we decide to use years on all Universe disambigs, but by current rules the names should be Universe Ultra, Universe Micromaster, and Universe 2008 as they were before your changes. --Khajidha (talk) 13:49, 22 August 2014 (EDT)
- Simple IF/THEN/ELSE. Either it is:
- IF no other Universe (2003 or 2008) toys, THEN (Universe), ELSE GOTO 2
- IF there are Universe 2003 *and* Universe 2008 toys of separate characters, THEN (Universe 2003) and (Universe 2008), ELSE GOTO 4. IF further disambiguation is needed, also GOTO 4.
- IF there are multiple Universe 2003 or Universe 2008 toys of separate characters, append a further designation to the end of the (Universe...) tag.
- OR it is....
- IF no other Universe (2003 or 2008) toys, THEN (Universe), ELSE GOTO 2
- IF they are of different factions, size-classes or other usable disambigs THEN append it as designation to the end of the (Universe...) tag, ELSE GOTO 3
- IF that doesn't separate them, or further separation is needed, but one is from Universe 2003 and the other Universe 2008, THEN (Universe 2003) and (Universe 2008). If further disambiguation is needed, GOTO 2.
- Pick one, don't mix and match. Can't have it both ways. - SanityOrMadness (talk) 14:06, 22 August 2014 (EDT)
- I prefer the first but the pages had been at the old names for years without protest so it seemed that the inconsistency was accepted. If this is to be changed we should probably take the discussion to the Community Portal. I would then ask that the 2003 and 2008 tags be added to all Universe disambigs (and similar measures taken for the new duplication of RID franchise tags). --Khajidha (talk) 14:18, 22 August 2014 (EDT)
- I suspect that quite literally no-one even noticed the discrepancy. Fringe, toy-only pages are like that.
- Otherwise, I would certainly support you taking the broader point to the Community Portal - ambiguous disambigs like (RID), (Universe) and (TF 2010) are a pet hate of mine, which only seem set to get more prevalent over time - but I suspect a couple of the admins may be inclined toward vetoing such a rearrangement (e'en though link fixing is pretty trivial). - SanityOrMadness (talk) 18:31, 22 August 2014 (EDT)
- We are not going to automatically disambiguate years in parentheticals where they are not needed to actually disambiguate from other pages. That is the purpose of the disambiguation, so that two articles with the same name can coexist -- it is not a means of organization, and anything superfluous to getting two articles disambiguated is unnecessary. We may as well just start putting parentheticals on every article no matter what, just in case, if that's the road we're going down. (note: we are not going down that road) --ItsWalky (talk) 22:13, 22 August 2014 (EDT)

It wasn't an "inconsistency". The "2003" was removed/not added to the Universe 2003 characters because it was superfluous for disambiguation. But since we disambiguate by franchises first, this was at "Universe 2008". Things not working according to your personal brand of pedantry aren't automatically inconsistent.
