Talk:Sou

I like the name just how it is, thank you. You know what, let's do this: let's see how many instances of ソー () vs. ソウ (sou) we can find for "saw" and if the latter outnumbers it, we'll move. I'll start:

ソウ = Saw (the movie, a proper noun)

サークルソー = Circle Saw ミュージカルソー = Musical Saw ルナティックチェーンソー = Lunatic Chainsaw

Who's got more? JelZe GoldRabbit 11:27, 4 June 2013 (EDT)

I like it as it is too. Though, I must inquire something. Why not just "Sō", since we have pages named "Shūta Gō", "Gan'ō", "Gaidōra", "Gekisōmaru", "Figure Ō", etc.? --Sabrblade 12:16, 4 June 2013 (EDT)
What I'd like to know is how to actually put the Ō in the search field without resorting to copy-paste. JelZe GoldRabbit 13:12, 4 June 2013 (EDT)
I think moving it to "Saw" means it no longer reads as a confusing syllabic pun, which while generally a good thing, is not representative of the meaning. (I'm also totally unconvinced it IS supposed to be "Saw", since no other Autobot partner's name includes a pun on their altmode - it's just Sw- as best as they can manage) I agree that we should be consistent with the use of "ō" versus "ou", though.) -LV 15:19, 4 June 2013 (EDT)
Yeah, I'm largely with LV on this. None of the other AM names are actual recognizable words. I'm not really sold on "Sō" though, as I think it's supposed to read as two syllables more or less, "so" "u", rather than an extended "o". (That is one problem with katakana. While kana IS a "one symbol one sound" script, it doesn't have enough sounds to cover the full range of English sounds, so you get inconsistent applications... not helped when they pull this kinda shit.) --M Sipher 19:41, 4 June 2013 (EDT)
I hadn't really even been looking at the kana, but it actually is So-u, isn't it? In which case, "Sō" would be wrong, and I could even be talked into thinking it should be written "Sw". -LV 19:53, 4 June 2013 (EDT)
The problem with "Sw" is the natural inclination to basically pronounce it "Swuh". I'm pretty content with leaving it at "Sou" as it's the closest we can get to the actual pronunciation. --M Sipher 21:31, 4 June 2013 (EDT)
Honestly, I'm not as invested in having it as specifically "Saw" as I am in having a "w" in there somewhere. Mimi 03:32, 5 June 2013 (EDT)
What about "Sowu"? -LV 09:50, 5 June 2013 (EDT)
Sew? Sow?KrytenKoro 11:21, 5 June 2013 (EDT)
Needle-and-thread or throwing seeds around? And "Sowu" won't do, we'd need another ウ or a ー (elongation mark) for that to work. I'd say don't change the name at all, not even to Sō. The way I see it, in Hiragana, normal "o" kana use "u" to make the "o" sound long, while in katakana we have ー. ソウ is written in katakana, but spelled like hiragana... I'm overthinking this again, aren't I? JelZe GoldRabbit 12:02, 5 June 2013 (EDT)
"Sow" would be ambiguous, as there are two different pronunciations for that letter sequence in English. --Khajidha 12:24, 5 June 2013 (EDT)
I don't see why "Sowu" doesn't replicate "So-u" adequately. There's no extension of a vowel sound there, just the breakup of "oh" and "oo" that conventional English phonetics imply a "W" sound between, preserving the "W" attempt of the katakana. This isn't even as interpretive as "Ooji" to "Wuji". -LV 12:27, 5 June 2013 (EDT)
Last call, in Japanese the "o" sound is usually extended with a "u" sound, not another "o". Hence our habit of using ō for the "ou" combo in any kana, as they're not separated sounds in Japanese; they slide into eachother. The "oo" combo is separated into o-o however. Now if you'll excuse me... *runs from Chris' pillows* JelZe GoldRabbit 12:21, 7 June 2013 (EDT)
I'm not going to pretend to be a capable translator of Japanese here, but it seems that of the many people who do know what they're talking about, you're the only one convinced that "So-u" must mean "So-with-an-extended-o" rather than the two-syllable "So-oo". Of the two, "So-oo" sounds considerably more like the beginning of the "Sw" phoneme which would be consistent with what Takara has been aiming for with all of the other names, rather than naming him after what he turns into. -LV 13:21, 7 June 2013 (EDT)

Man, you guys have no idea how badly I want to smother you with a pillow. - Chris McFeely 12:40, 5 June 2013 (EDT)
