Hmm... that's an interesting question. It's certainly possible. There are a few notes I was wondering about myself, namely the one about the Matrix's wisdom destroying the spores (in my experience, wisdom actually has a pretty strong track record against hatred -- besides that, we're talking about the same energy that made Unicron go kablooey) and the broader issue of how, in this episode in general, infected characters start working together to spread the plague rather than going berserk. I first saw this episode long before I saw Cosmic Rust, and I always thought the rusting Autobot whose hologram reads the rhyming curse at Megatron and co. in that episode was one of the Matrix Autobots towards the end of this episode.
