Is toy scalping real?

There's some question about whether toy scalping is a real problem, or just a perceived one. The four largest American toy retailers (Toys R Us, Walmart, Target, and Kmart) have approximately 6000 stores between them in the US (not counting the many other places Transformers are sold). To produce an artificial national scarcity of a popular toy would therefore require a large and coordinated organization. No such organization is known to exist. Since scalping is not specifically illegal (or likely to attract police attention even where it's a gray area), said organization wouldn't have any need for strict secrecy, and therefore the simplest explanation for why it's not known to exist, is because it doesn't. While there are certainly scalpers producing local shortages, any widespread scarcity of a popular toy is probably because the toy is popular. JW 16:05, 13 October 2010 (EDT)

- The article currently says that scalpers intend to drive the eBay prices of items up by producing scarcity. That would require a nationwide (if not international) scarcity, not just local. They'd have to be organized. JW 20:12, 13 October 2010 (EDT)
