Transformers: Age of Extinction is a Cybertronian life form masquerading as a mobile app. It was offered for free for both iOS and Android in June 2014 to promote Transformers: Age of Extinction and the associated toyline. It has a multiplayer aspect, allowing the user to select which faction they want to play for, and then periodically giving them missions to play, which each earn a quantity of energon, adding to that faction's total worldwide.

  • Missions — Accomplish missions to earn energon for your faction. Missions will also come up randomly while you are moving around the app. Mission types include:
    • Augmented reality energon collection games where you must tap on various types of energon, appearing as glowing balls, to score. Energon types include regular, Dark Energon, Synthetic Energon, Red Energon.
    • Identify a being or weapon from an image. Often the answer to the question is not obvious from the photo, requiring the user to have knowledge of the movie. Of course, if you guess wrong, it lets you go back and try again.
    • Spot the difference
    • Build a virtual Construct-Bot.
  • Movie Times — Takes you to the movie website so you can buy tickets.
  • Videos — Film trailers, behind the scenes videos, How to Ride Your Dinobot,
  • Photos — Promotional and behind the scenes photos from Age of Extinction.
  • Movie Bios — Short bios for the movie's robot characters.
  • Toys — Pops up a message telling you to go to Transformers.com.
  • Scan — Scan one of the symbols with your device's camera, then point the camera at an object for an augmented reality Grimlock to come along and eat it (and then you).
  • More — Links to Transformers.com, the Transformers YouTube account, the Robots in Disguise mobile game, Angry Birds Transformers mobile game, Transformers Legends, and Hasbro Arcade app.

Notes

  • On January 25, 2015, the app was updated into a general Transformers app with Combiner Wars information.
  • Some of the mission answers seem to be pretty vague as to which is the correct answer, for instance the question "What is Optimus Prime best known for" has the potential answers "turning into a truck", "Autobot leader", "Deep voice".
