All Power to the Space-Robots?

The Decepticons have created a powerful new weapon that can hypnotize humans and Autobots alike, making them completely obedient to the Decepticons' orders. Follwing a test run that ended with the Autobots barely able to repel their attackers, the villains hijack a TV station and use it to transmit their hypnotic messages across the country.

In order to counter this latest threat, the Autobot Pretenders have created new technology that allows all Autobots to become Pretenders capable of splitting themselves up into two separate units, one ground-based and one airborne, using a holographic duplicate to control the second unit. All holographic units are electronically interconnected via satellite support and are capable of transmitting jamming signals that repel the Decepticons' hypnotizing beams back to the senders, enabling the Autobots to drive their enemies off.   • The issue is dated 'March 1992' despite it being the April issue. The next issue is dated June, as per the usual bimonthly pattern.
  • The cover features a huge image of Chuffer! And he isn't even miscoloured for once, although he has gained the ability to shoot fireballs from his hands, but that is par for the course. In fact, the image appears to be swiped (though not traced) from the splash panel featured the first page of the comic, which explains the weird faction insignia on his chest (the Autobot insignia on Chuffer's chest in the comic panel was already rendered in an extremely crude manner to begin with).
  • The comic is titled "The City of Shadows".
  • If the text story seems a bit odd even for Condor's standards, that's because it wasn't originally written as a Transformers story. Vehicles that can split up into two separate units, one ground-based and one airborne, with one of them being controlled by a holographic duplicate of the pilot was the overarching gimmick for "Series 4" of Kenner's M.A.S.K. toyline released in 1988, called the "Split Seconds". The story even uses the literal German translation for "split seconds" ("Sekundenbruchteile") twice, which might have been intended as an intentional reference in the original version of the story. Also note that the Autobots are called "test pilots", and meet the scientific leader of a base, a phrasing that would make more sense for humans visiting a base rather than huge robots like the Transformers. Research on which M.A.S.K. issue this story was originally published in is currently pending.
  • There are several instances of weirdness at the beginning of the story: First it's Shockwave and Darkwing attacking, then Soundwave is located somewhere else (?), then it's Soundwave and Darkwing… turning off? If the sentence in question comes across a bit like a non sequitur, that's because it's like that in the original German version too. Supposedly, it's meant to refer to the previous sentence portion, but the phrasing and sentence structure is gramatically questionable, even in German.
  • There is an unnamed Autobot Powermaster on duty, but it doesn't appear to be Optimus Prime because Ultra Magnus is presented as leading the Autobot team in this story. At a later point, a Decepticon Powermaster is mentioned, which based on the context appears to refer to Soundwave. This would confirm that this story still works under the assumption that "Powermaster" is a rank. This is particularly odd because the very same story also lists the Powermasters as a separate group alongside the "Sparkler Minibots", the Pretenders and the Targetmasters.
  • The text story apparently works under the assumption that different time zones do not exist on Earth, since it claims at one point that "half of humanity" is watching TV at the same time on a Saturday evening. And since the Decepticons are apparently able to hypnotize an entire nation by hijacking a single TV station, that apparently means there is only one single TV station in the entire country? And yet later, the story implies that not all humans in the country were mind-controlled after all, since some are stated to be fleeing to shelters when the Decepticons attack their cities.
  • Both Joyride and Ultra Magnus display instances of smug superiority over humans, implying that those puny Earthlings have "inferior minds," and televisions are just "third rate monitors". And yet, both Quickmix and Goldbug imply that the Autobots are just as vulnerable to the Decepticons' mind control as the "inferior" humans, so what gives?

  • According to the text story, there are several Autobots capable of flight. Yet according to the text story from Comic-Magazin # 6, the peace-loving Autobots consider flight a demonstration of superiority they don't want to be associated with!
