Why I hate your writing
You suck at choosing quotes
A lot of the quotes that show up on our pages aren't even quotes in a functional sense. They're transcriptions of entire scenes, which may be fun or memorable scenes, but not feature especially noteworthy dialog. Or they're descriptions of action which happen to have some words in the middle of them, or attempts to transcribe a moment of particularly memorable voice acting, or totally mundane bits of dialogue that are only there because someone thought of a "clever" comment to put after it (or worse still, a really-stretching OMG G1 cross-reference.)
But that's not what a quote is really supposed to be. A quote should be memorable or clever or character-defining even out of context, even without scene descriptions, even if a person's never seen the episode. It should be relatively short and succinct, require minimal description, and not rely on prior knowledge to make sense. That time when Prime went "UUUGAAAUGUAGH" may be hilarious to listen to, and it may be a great voice acting moment for Peter Cullen. But put it in print and it's a terrible quote, and you deserve to be executed for putting it there.
You dogpile onto stuff that probably shouldn't be there to begin with
On this wiki you'll find endless reams of Trivia notes that read "X is something something blah blah blah blah. Granted, X is also this that the other. However, to be fair, X might have been yadda yadda. Then again, X is not the first whozit to whatzit. Of course, it's possible that X could have this that the other."
It is inevitably the case that each sentence was written by a different user. Each successive user has tacked a wishy-washy conditional onto a sentence that wasn't made to be conditionalized. The result is a sloppy mess, a soggy mush of maybe-kindas that make it sound like we really don't know what the fuck we're talking about. It's the verbal equivalent of Cheerios left soaking in milk for an hour.
If you find yourself using any of these phrases, it should raise your eyebrow:
- Granted
- Then again
- To be fair
- But still
- However
Instead of dogpiling onto a note with one of these useless qualifiers, rewrite the original note. And if you can't rewrite it adequately, maybe your "cute" little addendum isn't worth writing in the first place.
If I catch you doing this, I will kill you. I mean it. Reach my hands right through the intardnet tubes and crush your throat till your eyeballs pop out. Try me.
You pad out your writing with pointless verbal fluff
It's a fundamental rule of all writing: Never use fifty words when ten will do.
This means the following phrases should never ever appear on this wiki, because they do not mean anything and add absolutely nothing to a sentence:
- "It is important to note that" - really? How important is it? Will there be dire consequences if I fail to note it?
- "It is worth noting that" - does that mean everything else is not worth noting?
- "It should be noted that" - if we weren't planning to note it, we wouldn't be reading in the first place!
- "This is a reference to" - in addition to being a verbal packing peanut, this is the most ham-handed method of linking two sentences imaginable.
- "As the episode begins" / "The episode ends with" - what? The first line of the summary describes what's happening in the beginning of the episode?! NO! Thanks, I never would have guessed!
- "If you look, you can see" - so if I don't look, I can't see it? Wow.
Your trivia notes suck
- You don't have a damn clue what a reference is. HINT: Something vaguely resembling something else is not a reference. ANOTHER HINT: a story cannot reference something that didn't exist when the story was written.
- "X is the first/last/only character to do such and such" may occasionally be worth mentioning. Occasionally. However, "X is the first/last/only character to do such and such, except for this other guy who already did it" is never worth noting. If someone else already did it, then X isn't the first! Period!! Why this is not flagrantly obvious to anyone with enough neurons to turn on a computer is unclear to me, but apparently it isn't.
