The Invisibility Factor

Synopsis

[edit]

Intro

[edit]

Pages 1,2, and 69: On a cold, clear night Kup and Hot Rod are driving through the desert when they spot an object streaking through the sky and coming towards them. The strange object turns out to be a rickety spaceship whose engines are failing. It's also alternating between being visible and invisible. Amazingly, Kup is not reminded of anything. Hot Rod rushes to see who is inside but Kup holds him back, thinking it might be a Decepticon trick. They need to make a decision: Check inside the craft now or go back to the Autobot City of Metroplex for back-up?

Main Branch A

[edit]

Pages 54 and 19: Deciding not to head back, the two Autobots transform and duck behind a tall rock. Yeah, a rock. The hatch of the spaceship opens to reveal a brown-haired woman holding a toaster-sized box. Hot Rod rashly jumps out from behind the Autobots' dubious hiding spot, and thus scaring the poor woman. Kup quickly defuses the situation, explaning that he and Hot Rod are Autobots. The woman remarks of having heard of Autobots, but thinking it was "just a crazy story kids liked to tell." The woman goes on to introduce herself as Sarah Sanders and the box she's holding as her Invisibility Device. She was testing the device when her ship broke down. Kup and Hot Rod instantly realize that this Invisibility Device could be a useful tool against the Decepticons. Do they talk her into it? Or just take the device?

Page 45:
Unable to resist his own impetuous nature, Hot Rod yanks the box from Sarah's hands. Sarah protests but Hot Rod arrogantly suggests she should be happy because the Autobots will use it to save her planet from the Decepticons. Kup tries to stop him but Hot Rod takes off anyway, dreaming of the praise he'll recieve from Ultra Magnus back at Metroplex. He doesn't make it back though. Along the way Hot Rod goes over a bump, activating the device's self-destruct mechanism. The device explodes and Hot Rod, along with his plan, goes to pieces. END.
Pages 25 and 26:
They try to talk Sarah into allowing them the use of the device, but she refuses, not wanting her invention to be used for war. Suddenly, they're attacked by a group of Decepticons consisting of Thrust, Laserbeak, Ravage, Starcream, Scavenger, Shockwave and their leader, Galvatron. The concussion from their blasts knocks Sarah to the ground and the device out of her hands. The trio is forced to evacuate the area and leave the device behind. After noticing that the Decepticons are not following them, the Autobots transform and duck behind rocks again, this time to see what the Decepticons are up to. Thrust complains about the Autobots getting away but Galvatron doesn't care. He wants to know more about the spaceship and the box the woman dropped. Do they attack now? Try to steal the device from the Decepticons? Or do they fear the Decepticons will try and take off in the spacecraft, in which case they'll need to go back to Autobot City for back-up and a shuttle?

Page 8:
Kup and Hot Rod decide to strike now to prevent Galvatron from claiming the device. However, their strategy is a poor one as they are quickly overwhelmed by the larger Decepticon force. There are no further details as it's just too sad to think about. END.
Pages 18, 28, and 64:
After watching Shockwave roll the device over in his hand, Kup and Hot Rod let the Decepticons leave. The Autobots give them a small head start, before telling Sarah to stay behind while they tail the Decepticons. The Decepticons trip ends with them going into a canyon. Hot Rod starts to follow but instead begrudgingly listens to Kup detailing a strategy used the time he and another Autobot stopped a Renarian attack all by themselves. With their plan confirmed, they start racing back and forth and firing from various spots on the canyon's rim. The flurry of attacks and resulting state of panic causes the Decepticons to fire back wildly, filling the air with debris. Amid the confusion, Hot Rod slips down to the bottom of the crater. He looks around and see he has two options: swipe the Invisibility Device from Shockwave, or try to take out the closer in proximity Galvatron?

Page 13:
He decides to go after Galvatron. But as Hot Rod takes off towards the Decepticon leader, Starscream comes flying through and takes aim. Being an easy target, Hot Rod is blasted by Starscream just before reaching Galvatron. I guess you could say poor Hot Rod is fired. END.
Page 71:
Uncharacteristically making the smart decision, Hot Rod stays with his first instinct. Hot Rod grabs the device in a run-by, before transforming and racing off. Shockwave yells for the other Decepticons to follow him, but Kup fires just behind Hot Rod from behind his hiding place on the rim (probably another rock). The blast shatters the canyon wall, burying the Decepticons in rubble. Hot Rod and Kup rejoice. END.

Pages 52 and 59:
The Decepticons do decide to take off into space, needing more time to study the device. Hot Rod and Kup take off to Metroplex to alert Ultra Magnus. Ultra Magnus orders an immediate shuttle launch. But when the Autobots make it into space, there's no sign of the Decepticons anywhere. Kup figues the Decepticons are hiding on the Earth's moon. The asteroid belt beyond Mars is Prowl's suggestion. Springer thinks the Decepticons have already figured out how to use the Invisibility Device and are lying in wait. Who's right?

Page 10:
Looking at the dark side of the moon, the Autobots are unable to see anything on the moon's surface. Thier scanners come up empty as well. Hot Rod suggests baiting the Decepticons into revealing their location by firing at the moon, which would draw fire in return. Jazz denounces the plan as being too risky. They'd have to reveal their location too. However, Jazz has a better idea. Should Ultra Magnus go with Hot Rod's plan or listen to what Jazz has to say?

Page 40:
Going with Hot Rod's plan, Ultra Magnus orders Springer to fire at the moon. The shots streak towards the moon but fade away almost instantly. The Autobot ship is suddenly rocked by an explosion. The Autobots gambit gave away their position to the Decepticons, who blast the Autobot ship to bits of space junk. END.
Pages 46 and 60:
Ultra Magnus listens to Jazz's plan and quickly agrees to it. He orders all power be shutoff, explains what's going on to Springer, then orders the crew to be quiet. With no lights or power being used on the ship and sunlight being blocked by the moon, the Autobot ship can't be seen by sight or sensors. After a few moments of drifting quietly through space, Ultra Magnus signals Springer to send out a probe towards the moon. The Decepticons mistake the probe for the Autobot ship and start firing. Now knowing the location of the enemy, the Autobots open fire. Amid the torrent of Autobot blasts, the Decepticons get lucky and land a shot on the Autobot ship. The Autobots quickly start the engines of the damaged but still function ship. Hot Rod then notices the Decepticons trying to take off. Springer doesn't let that happen, taking aim and destroying the Decepticons' ship with a single blast. Kup laments the destruction of the Invisibility Device, but Ultra Magnus takes comfort in knowing that the Decepticon menace has also been destroyed - at least for now. END.

Page 17:
Following Prowl's suggestion, the Autobots head into the asteroid field only to find their ship in danger of being destroyed by the asteroids. Springer figures if the Decepticons made it through, so can the Autobots. Jazz and Hot Rod aren't so sure. What do they do?

Page 11:
Springer carefully navigates the ship back to Earth. Having lost all trace of the Decepticons, the Autobots convince themselves that the Decepticons couldn't have made it through. A few days later, explosions rock the Autobot city of Metroplex. It's the Decepticons and they're using the Invisibility Device. The Autobots return fire wildly in a vain attempt to defend against their invisible foes. But they can't fight what they can't see and soon all of Metroplex is nothing more than a great junkyard. END.
Page 27:
Springer decides to go for it and continues through the asteroid belt. As Springer deftly maneuvers through the field, the Autobots suddenly find themselves confronted with two huge asteroids. The ship is approaching the asteroids head-on and Ultra Magnus determines the only move is blow them both up. Miss one and the ship will still be destroyed. But there's ten blast buttons on Springer's control panel and only some of them will blast both asteroids at once. Pick a number from one to ten.

Picked 1,3,5,7, or 9 (Pages 30, 48, and 49):
Success! The destruction of the asteroids leads to bits of rock battering the Autobot ship as they fly by. After Prowl's damage report shows only dents and scratches, Springer notices they've cleared the asteroid belt. There's no sign of the Decepticons, but the Autobots begin to feel as though they're being watched. Kup starts to warn of the danger if the Decepticons figure out how use the Invisibility Device when shots from out of nowhere rock the Autobot ship, confirming his fears. Jazz thinks they should run. Kup remembers that Sarah said the Invisibility Device wasn't perfected yet and devises a plan to exploit that weakness. Do they go or listen to Kup's plan?

Page 51:
The Autobots agree that they need to get out of there and take off. But they run in vain, as the Decepticons land blow after blow on the Autobot ship. Eventually, the ship is ripped apart and the Autobots become bits of junk littering outer space. END.
Page 58:
Kup quickly explains his plan to Ultra Magnus, who orders the rest of the crew to fire only on his signal. Despite the Decepticons continued blasting of the Autobot ship, Magnus continues to have the Autobots hold their fire. Finally the Inivisibilty Device fails, just long long enough for Ultra Magnus to have Autobots open fire and blow the Decepticon ship to space dust. Hot Rod remarks that the Invisibilty Device must have been lost in the explosion. Ultra Magnus agrees, adding that it did its job well by making the Decepticons invisible for good. END.

Picked 2,4,6 or 8 (Pages 56 and 11):
The left hand asteroid is destroyed but the right side is too late. The collision with the other asteroid damages the ship's engines and hurls the Autobots through space. Ultra Magnus orders Springer to put the engines in full reverse so they can escape the asteroid belt. Springer isn't sure the engines can take it, but Magnus says they have no choice. Fighting unresponsive controls, Springer manages to slowly back the ship out of the asteroid belt. The damage to the ship forces the Autobots to give up the chase and turn back to Earth. END.
Picked 10 (Page 53):
The blasts completely miss the asteroids, leaving the Autobot ship to be crushed between them. The Autobots and their ship are... spaced out. END.

Pages 48 and 49:
There's no sign of the Decepticons, but the Autobots begin to feel as though they're being watched. Main Branch B

[edit]

Page 20: Smelling a trap, Kup and Hot Rod head back to Metroplex for back-up. They report to Ultra Magnus, who agrees that further investigation is needed and sends Kup and Hot Rod back with a team consisting of Jazz, Sunstreaker, Springer and Prowl. Upon their return however, there is no sign of the spacecraft. The other Autobots think Kup and Hot Rod have lost it. Do they go back to Metroplex and have Kup and Hot Rod checked for loose wiring? Or continue searching the desert?

Page 68:
The Autobots head back to Metroplex, where Ratchet's examination reveals nothing amiss outside a little bit of sand and gravel. The spaceship is forgotten, until a few days later, when an entire fleet of the same kind of ships attacks Metroplex. The Autobots and the city are not only caught off guard by their neuron beams but destroyed as well. As he surveys the damage, Galvatron muses that it's a good thing the Autobots left the Decepticon test craft out in the desert instead of claiming it for themselves. Otherwise, the Decepticons couldn't have retrieved it and perfected the technology. Both Earth and Cybertron belong to the Decepticons. END.
Pages 31, 32, and 14:
The team agrees to take a good look around, with the caveat that if they don't find anything Kup and Hot Rod will be getting thorough check-ups. Initially, they can't find anything. Then Hot Rod notices a path in the sand, evidence that something heavy was dragged away. Figuring the Decepticons are the only other beings on Earth strong enough to drag a spaceship, the Autobots decide to follow the trail. The trail continues through the desert until it suddenly stops at rocky terrain with no sign of the ship. Kup notices Scavenger rolling through the desert in vehicle mode and alerts everyone to take cover. As they watch Scavenger roll by, they see that he has an Earth woman trapped in his shovel. Do the Autobots try to attack Scavenger and save the woman now? Or follow him to see where he's taking the woman before trying a rescue?

Page 21:
Springer quickly transforms and leaps out in front of Scavenger. This startles the Decepticon, causing him to drop the woman. Scavenger quickly transforms in preparation for battle, but runs off when the rest of the Autobots show themselves. Should they pursue Scavenger or let him escape and find out what's going on with the woman?

Page 33:
The Autobots follow Scavenger right into the midst of huge group of Decepticons crowded around the spaceship. Is it their turn to run? Or do they stay and fight?

Pages 41 and 65:
The Autobots decide to run, each of the six going his own way. The Decepticons become confused and argue over which way to go. Before they decide, Hot Rod makes a U-turn and heads straight back at the Decepticons, blinding them with his headlights. The Autobots use the distraction to elude the Decepticons and rendezvous elsewhere. Once re-united, they decide to track down the young woman they saw earlier. They find her wandering through the desert. She thinks they might be with the Decepticons but Kup assures her they're not. After introductions are made, Springer asks why the Decepticons were following her. She decides she can trust the Autobots and tells them of her spaceship with built-in Invisibility Device. She's been followed as of late by unknown individuals and, due to the danger her invention presents, decided to destroy the ship and her notes by crash-landing the ship into the ocean. However, the ship broke down in the desert before she could do so and now it's in the possession of the Decepticons. Do the Autobots get Sarah to build them an Invisibility Device of their own so they can fight back against the Decepticons? Or search for her ship?

Pages 3,70,34 and 72:
Despite the Autobots' attempts to convince her otherwise, Sarah refuses to let her invention be turned into a weapon of war and runs off into the desert. Just then Dirge flys overhead and fires a missile right at Sarah. Hot Rod yells out a warning to Sarah, who leaps out of the way just in time. Hot Rod picks her up in car mode and takes off. They zig-zag to avoid Dirge's blasts until they're able to unite with the other Autobots and head to Metroplex. Back at Metroplex, Sarah decides to show the Autobots how to scramble her device, that being preferable to the Decepticons taking over the Earth. Two days later the sound of Decepticon jets fills the air, prompting the Autobots to set up the Invisibility Scrambler. It works like a charm and the unaware Decepticons are easily shot down by the Autobots. As he's being imprisoned Starscream asks how the Autobots knew they were there. Hot Rod replies that their plan was pretty clear. In fact, they saw right through it. END.
Page 44:
The Autobots decide to look for the ship and find it being studied by the Decepticons in a narrow canyon. Knowing that it won't be long before the Decepticons detect them, the Autobots decide they need to attack now. However, there's a lot of Decepticons in the canyon so a direct attack may not be the best approach. Do they attack directly or see if Prowl can come up with a better idea?

Page 61:
Taking the direct approach, the Autobots zoom down the canyon at full speed with their horns blaring and headlights at full power. Though the Decepticons become startled by the noise and blinded by the light for only a few seconds, it's enough for Hot Rod to steal the Invisibility Device. The Decepticons try to mobilize but the Autobots' firepower overwhelms them. Hot Rod eventually breaks out of the circle of Autobots and heads for safety. The others notice and take off to join him, leaving the Decepticons immobilized in the canyon. Hot Rod remarks that even without the Invisibility Device they blinded the Decepticons with their brilliance. Kup agrees and decides he'll refer to this battle in his stories as "The Decepticon Dazzle." END.
Pages 22 and 37:
Prowl comes up with a plan to use Hot Rod as a decoy. He taunts the Decepticons into going after him, leaving only Galvatron, Scavenger and Shockwave in the canyon. The rest of the Autobots use the opportunity to take out Scavenger and Shockwave. Galvatron decides to flee, swearing revenge on the Autobots and leaving the Invisibility Device behind. Meanwhile, Hot Rod is being chased by a pack of angry Decepticons and loving it. His fun stops when finds himself at the edge of very wide and deep canyon. What to do? Try to climb down the canyon wall? Jump it? Or try to trick the Decepticons?

Page 42:
Hot Rod quickly transforms and starts climbing down the canyon wall. Starscream comes flying overhead in jet mode and begins firing at Hot Rod. Hot Rod frantically returns fire and hits Starscream, causing him to crash into the canyon. A secret door opens from the canyon floor, revealing a Decepticon rescue team which hoses down Starscream and pulls him inside the secret door. Hot Rod radios his location to the other Autobots and ducks into a cave to wait. Within minutes a full Autobot army is attacking the canyon and battering down the secret door. Behind it, they discover a newly built Decepticon base. The base is quickly destroyed, and Ultra Magnus congratulates Hot Rod on the discovery. Hot Rod says it was nothing, but his circuits are humming with pride.END.
Page 50 and 9:
Hot Rod backs up, revs his engine and goes for the jump. He lands safely on the other side. Not wanting to stick around and see what happens with the Decepticons, Hot Rod takes off to find the other Autobots. When he finds them, he sees Sarah climbing into her ship. She apologizes, explaining that she feels the Invisibility Device is just too dangerous. She then manages to take off in her ship. The Autobots decide she's right and head for home. As they leave, Kup starts telling them about the time he saw a similar device on the outer planet of Serton. It was a warm evening, very much like this one, and... END.
Pages 6 and 9
Hot Rod turns around and takes off straight towards the Decepticons. They frantically try to shoot at Hot Rod but he's too fast for them to aim at. Realizing that he's acting insanely, the Decepticons scamble to get out of the way. Hot Rod zooms on through and heads off to find the other Autobots. Page 5:
Wanting the Autobots to stand and fight would require one to have sand in their sensors! Completely outnumbered, the Autobots are soon just a pile of spare parts. Had the Autobots made it to the spacecraft, they would have discovered that it was a messenger craft from the planet Quintesson. The Quintessons were sending news that they would aid the Decepticons in a full scale attack on Earth.END.

The Autobots tail Scavenger back to Decepticon headquarters where he ushers his captive into the building. The Autobots sneak in and continue to follow Scavenger until he finds Galvatron. The Decepticon leader demands the woman give her name. She tells him it's Sarah Sanders and that's all she's going to tell him. Galvatron informs her that the Decepticons have her spacecraft and she'll be telling them how it works. Pages 62 and 24:
Prowl thinks up a trick and whispers his idea to the other Autobots. Soon as the Decepticons start moving in closer to Sarah, Jazz puts on a massive display of light and sound. It's so massive the Decepticons become completely distracted and disoriented allowing Sarah to run out of the room and into the Autobots waiting in the hallway. Kup quickly assures the woman that she's safe and asks her to come with them. The Decepticons manage to gather their wits by this point and start towards the Autobots, who take off with Sarah down the hallway. At the end are two doors and they need to make a quick decision. Time to flip a coin. Heads they go left, tails they go right.

They take the left door and end up in a Decepticon courtyard with Sarah's ship being guarded by Decepticon droids. The droids turn fire on the Autobots, wiping them out completely. Pages 43,16,38, and 66:
The door on the right leads to a closet full of spare parts, including Decepticon logos. Prowl suggests the Autobots put them on and try to look mean as they head out the door on the left. That door leads to a courtyard where Sarah's ship is protected by Decepticon droids. Having donned Decepticon emblems, the Autobots pass muster with the droids' scanners and are able to enter the spacecraft. Sarah throws on the Invisibility Device, hoping her imperfect invention will provide cover long enough for Kup and Prowl to fix the ship's engines. They finish their rudimentary repair job just as the ship becomes visible again and a target for the Decepticons. Sarah starts the engines which work, albeit too slowly to escape. Risking engine burnout, she adds more power. It does the trick as the Invisibility Device kicks back on and the ship reaches full speed. Safely back at the Autobot City of Metroplex, Sarah agrees wholeheartedly to help the Autobots and give them the plans to her device. It's truly the end for the Decepticons.END.
