I really don't think a split-by-year is needed. It's not like the line changed significantly across that boundary. Compressing it all will fill up blank space AND keep the TOC from being three screens long. --M Sipher (talk) 19:50, 9 October 2016 (EDT)

Yeah, my initial motivation was making things feel more chronological, without an odd sort of mishmash of newer/temporary size classes at the bottom, but the giant TOC is super-hideous and, yeah, it ought to solve the spacing in quite a few places.
