Actually it's where the Wraiths grow the honey they sell at the farmer's market.

The realities of invasion necessitate some manner of home base or stronghold. For the Dire Wraiths, that role is fulfilled by the Wraith Hives, organic structures that serve as markers of the Wraiths' presence on targeted worlds.

In spite of the Wraiths' ability to disguise themselves as organic aliens, the Wraith Hives were a hallmark of their invasions and recognized by the Space Knights as targets. Earthfall

In the mid-19th century, a group of Wraiths had established a hive on an unknown planet for use as a base. Within, they reviewed the actions of the recently deceased Vekktral and declared that they would follow only the path of magic. Shining Armor #5

When making planetfall on Earth, Rom was surprised to find the planet lacked any Wraith Hives in spite of the planet being a target for Wraith conquest. Earthfall He later relayed this information to Orphion and Livia, Reinforcements, Part 3 before it was later discovered that the Wraiths intended to terraform Earth via the Presence.
