Nestled at the dark heart of a black nebula somewhere in the far reaches of space, the planet Zarak (ザラック Zarakku) is hidden from sight by clouds of greenish gas that enshroud its surface. Used as a secret base by Decepticon Emperor Scorponok, the tiny planet has been heavily mechaformed, replacing much of its barren, rocky surface with metallic layers that extend into the depths of the planet, a la Cybertron itself.

Seeking a means to counter the power of his arch-rival Fortress's gigantic Transtector battleship, Scorponok arranged for the construction of his own giant Transtector. When the Decepticons invaded planet Beast, they enslaved the native Beastformers and put them to work constructing components for it, Rebellion on Planet Beast which were then brought to the planet Zarak and assembled. After wresting leadership of the Decepticons from Galvatron by arranging for the former emperor's apparent death, Scorponok's first act was to provide his Transtector with power. He had the Decepticon Headmasters steal the energy-collecting satellite Sol 1 from Earth, and its stored energy was beamed down to Zarak, into his waiting Transtector. The Shadow Emperor, Scorponok The plan had one disadvantage to the Decepticon leader: The Autobots were now were aware of Decepticon activity on Zarak. Fortunately for the villain, Zarak's gaseous shroud prevented the Autobots from observing any activity on the planet from afar, and Scorponok prevented them from investigating any further by orchestrating several high-profile attacks upon Earth to keep the Autobots occupied. The completion of Scorponok's Transtector coincided with his plan for the destruction of Mars. After being informed that the plasma energy bombs that would destroy the planet were in place, Scorponok relocated to Zarak and activated his Transtector with a spectacular display of pyrotechnics that illuminated the entire planet with bolts of purple electricity. Explosion on Mars!! Maximus Is in Danger Then, as the assembled Decepticon forces on Chaar watched over a viewscreen, the surface of Zarak cracked and split open, and the planet was reduced to cosmic dust as Scorponok's Transtector—named "MegaZarak" for the planet on which it was created—was born into the universe.
