To keep [[Prima]]'s powerful [[Star Saber (Prima)|Star Saber]] out of the hands of the evil [[The Fallen|Megatronus]], [[Solus Prime]] used her [[Forge of Solus Prime|forge]] to shatter the blade into five pieces, one of which was the Origin Matrix. The Origin Matrix was then hidden on prehistoric Earth of [[Primax -408.24 Epsilon]], after which [[Vector Prime]] placed a time lock on the local spacetime so that no one could access the Matrix. When two ships were detected passing into the [[Primax -408.24 Epsilon]] [[universal stream]] during a particular time period, it was of particular concern to the [[Transcendent Technomorph|TransTechs]], as it happened to be the location in which the Origin Matrix was hidden. [[Depth Charge (BW)|Depth Charge]] was recruited to travel there and locate the Matrix before it fell into the wrong hands. {{storylink|Invasion: Epilogue}}

Arriving on prehistoric [[Earth]], Depth Charge joined up with a small group of [[Autobot]]s who had originated in the [[Primax 207.0 Epsilon]] universal stream and persuaded them to help him search for the Origin Matrix. Their sensors eventually detected the Matrix's unique energy signature. {{storylink|Shattered Hope}} Depth Charge went to retrieve it alone, only to find it was heavily defended by [[Vok|alien]] security systems. He was soon joined by the other Autobots, now calling themselves Maximals, and [[Ultra Magnus (G1)/Marvel Comics continuity|Ultra Magnus]] was able to find and claim the Origin Matrix. After using it to scare off some bats, the Maximals were confronted by [[Megatron (G1)/Marvel Comics continuity|Megatron]] in brand-spanking new [[Gigastorm Armor]]. {{storylink|Shattered Balance}} By inserting the Origin Matrix into his gun, Magnus created a dimensional gateway to the future and took the Origin Matrix through with him. {{storylink|Shattered Destiny}} He emerged on modern-day Cybertron, rendezvousing with [[Aquarius (SG)|Aquarius]] and the local heroic Decepticons, {{storylink|Transformers I.Q.#issue 54|Transformers I.Q. trivia bonus #12}} and it was decided that he would hold onto the Matrix until [[Nexus Prime]] could arrive. {{storylink|Falling into Place}}

Magnus and his team subsequently traveled via [[stellar spanner]] to the dimensionally-displaced positive polarity Earth, whereupon his team joined [[Treadshot (SG)|Treadshot]]'s fight against evil Ultra Magnus. Negative polarity Ultra Magnus tried to stab his positive polarity counterpart in the spark, but then the [[Terminus Blade]] suddenly reacted with the Origin Matrix. {{storylink|Distant Fissures}} As the fellow [[Artifacts of the Primes]] refused to harm each other, the Matrix merely recharged the Blade. Evil Magnus took advantage of this distraction to get the jump on his counterpart, knocking the Origin Matrix out of his chest. *The concept of the Origin Matrix evolved out of the backstory the creatives at [[HasLab (Hasbro department)|HasLab]] developed for Prima and his Star Saber circa 2009. As detailed in the [[Binder of Revelation]], the original idea was that the jewel on the hilt on the Saber became the [[Matrix of Leadership]] after the sword was shattered. But that was fundamentally incompatible with the idea of Prima and his sword being [[multiversal singularity|multiversal singularities]] (since there are infinite different Matrices of Leadership across the multiverse, not just one), so in 2012, [[Fun Publications]] retroactively created the "Origin Matrix" to fulfil the role of "the Matrix from the Saber's hilt" for the "singularity version" of Prima. The original idea of the Matrix of Leadership being the gem from the sword, meanwhile, was fulfilled in the [[Aligned continuity family]], and from there, proliferated to other stories, like the [[2005 IDW continuity]].

*The Origin Matrix's exact appearance is fairly inconsistent. The Matrix accessory included with Ultra Mammoth is simply a redeco of Big Convoy's Energon Matrix in silver with a blue core. However, when it made its fictional debut in ''Invasion: Epilogue'', the Origin Matrix was depicted as having silver handles, a blue casing, and a white core. When it next showed up in ''Shattered Balance'', it was instead depicted as gold with a red core like Big Convoy's original Energon Matrix. In ''Distant Fissures'', the Matrix visible inside Ultra Mammoth's chest was now in toy-accurate colors. Finally, ''Restoration'' would depict it with an entirely different design closer to the original Generation 1 Matrix of Leadership but keeping the silver deco and blue core, with the very next panel further stylizing the shape of the Matrix.
