The '''transmat reduction beam''' is one of the many gadgets in [[Perceptor (G1)|Perceptor]]'s laboratory.  It can be used to either increase or decrease the size of objects — one of its conventional uses is to enlarge damaged microchips to a size at which they can be more easily repaired.  Its effects are only temporary, however, and after a while anything which has had its size altered will revert to its original state.

While using the reduction beam to enlarge one of [[Ironhide (G1)|Ironhide]]'s chips to a size where he could more easily work with it, Perceptor found himself on the receiving end of [[Brawn (G1)|Brawn]]'s insults.

Perceptor later proposed a radical use for the device — he, Brawn and [[Bumblebee (G1)|Bumblebee]] used it to shrink themselves to a size suitable for infiltrating [[Megatron (G1)|Megatron]]'s armour.  Once inside, they were able to locate and extract the [[Heart of Cybertron]], an energy source which the [[Decepticon]] leader had installed within himself.
