The Jedi are a religious organization of warriors, drawn from many species of their home galaxy, who worship a bioenergy field known as the "Force". For millennia, their order has guarded the Galactic Republic against threats both external and internal, most notably the Sith, their monastic rivals. Both Jedi and Sith orders draw on the Force for strength and skill, but unlike the Sith, the Jedi use the "light side" of the Force, which advocates a detached emotional center, and listening to the Force to discover the proper course of action.

Sometimes the power of the Force is apparently not enough, as most known Jedi have been seen piloting "Jedi Starfighters", one-man spaceships that transform into powerful battle suits. They also all wield lightsabers in combat.
