The template {{unknown source}} is used to easily tag an image for which the source is not known, such as a panel from an unknown comic or a character portrait from an unknown sourcebook. Using the template causes the image to be placed in Category:Images from undetermined sources, where hopefully someone else will recognize the image and know where it came from.
