This article is about the 2019 comic series. For the similarly-titled 2009 comic series, see The Transformers (IDW). For a list of other meanings, see Transformers (disambiguation).
We're back, baby!

Transformers is an ongoing comic series from IDW Publishing that debuted in March 2019 and ended in June 2022, releasing issues every two weeks for its first six months of publication before switching to a monthly release schedule in September 2019. The series marked the first installment of a brand-new continuity for IDW's Transformers comics, replacing the previous ongoing continuity that ran from 2005 to 2018.

Before an endless war raged between the Autobots and the Decepticons. Before Orion Pax took on the mantle of Optimus Prime. Before Earth ever learned about the strange robotic alien beings from Cybertron—the Transformers—there was peace. There was society. There was wonder. Join us now at the dawn of a bold new era...

Overview

[edit]
The day when we see Optimus and Megatron standing side by side... pfftt

Set prior to the war between Autobots and Decepticons, Transformers takes place on a thriving, peaceful Cybertron that serves as an interstellar commerce hub. The era of peace is brought to an unexpected end, however, when the planet experiences its first murder in living memory.[1]

Creative team

[edit]

The series is written by Brian Ruckley. Issues were regularly drawn by more than one artist. In the beginning, duties were originally split between Angel Hernandez and Cachét Whitman, with Hernandez illustrating the majority of the pages in each issue. [2] The second arc of the series saw the introduction of Anna Malkova and Beth McGuire-Smith to the artistic team, and Malkova has since become the primary artist for the book.

Notes

[edit]
  • Transformers makes extensive use of Generations toy designs, notably from the War for Cybertron Trilogy, including toy-mandatory features such as protruding hinge covers, screwholes and 5mm pegholes. Characters without Generations figures generally utilize the most recent alternative (such as from Cyberverse) or their original Generation 1 designs. Comments from artists indicate this is not a Hasbro mandate[3] but rather a consensus for ease-of-access to reference material and therefore, consistency.[4]
  • Initial promotion for the series stated that Hernandez and Ron Joseph would be the artists, but Joseph had to drop the project for personal reasons and was replaced by Whitman.[2]
