With Cybertron on the tipping point of crisis, Megatron reflects on his journey as he puts the Ascenticon house in order.

Synopsis

Megatron stews as he watches a live feed of Sentinel Prime addressing the citizens of Cybertron to deliver a stinging condemnation of the Ascenticon movement and its supposedly false promises. The Ascenticon leader orders Jhiaxus to dump as much of their emergency energon rations as possible into his systems regardless of comfort—the situation with the Rise has grown out of his control, and he intends to correct that as soon as he can. As Megatron grits his teeth and powers through the painful overcharging process, he remembers...

A simple miner during the great Cybertronian Expansion, Megatron found fame in the gladiatorial arena before the destructive War of the Threefold Spark forced him onto the battlefield. In one battle, the wounded warrior encountered the enemy leader Exarchon himself on the battlefield, saved only by the last-minute intervention of Strika's artillery battery. While the people of Cybertron dreaded his twisted nature and his arcane technologies, Megatron came to understand that it was Exarchon's will, demented as it was, that truly gave him his fearsome reputation.

In Iacon, Bumblebee reports to Chromia and Orion Pax about the incident in the Cybertronian Mountains. Chromia confirms that two members of Ruckus's gang are in Autobot custody but comatose, while the others are dead. Orion is more worried by Bumblebee's report that Shockwave is involved with the Rise—and Senator Soundwave seems to be abetting him. Chromia informs the yellow 'bot that they suspect Frenzy is the 'bot responsible for Brainstorm's murder; Orion confirms this... and then drops the bombshell: that the Rise certainly put out orders to silence the Voin witness to Brainstorm's murder, Quake has abruptly disappeared in the days since the attack on the Voin and Rubble... which means that all evidence points to Quake killing Rubble. Bumblebee shouts that they should've told him something sooner, but Pax reminds him he withheld information for his own safety—what he might do with the information, or what might have been done to him had 'Bee gone after Quake by himself. The time has now come, Orion announces, to tell Sentinel Prime everything they've learned.

As Megatron leaves the city and heads into the badlands, his memories turn to the more recent past: in the wake of the war against Exarchon, Cybertron began to rebuild, but the new society that took shape under the Nominus Edict was one that actively eschewed the glories of old in the hopes of maintaining the new peace. As mines and starship yards closed down, and forgings became strictly controlled, Cybertronians became complacent and unwilling to push boundaries or upset the new status quo. Termagax and her Ascenticons championed a return to the days of exploration and conquest, and although her words captured Megatron's imagination, she lacked the drive to turn her vision into a reality. Beaten down, denounced, and defeated, Termagax abandoned society... and Megatron came to realize that, like Exarchon before him, only he could impose his will onto the Ascenticon cause and forge it into the tool that Cybertron needed to build a better future.

At one of the remote Rise bases, Hyperdrive watches as Flamewar plays a prank on Barricade as Megatron arrives... much to the irritation of Shockwave, who has to put the entire compound on lockdown every time their leader comes and goes. The Ascenticon leader eyes the corpse-strewn bunker with suspicion, but has little time for Shockwave's latest experiments aimed at unlocking the lost technology of the Threefold Spark that built the bunker—instead, Megatron shrugs off Shockwave's protests that the fuel-addicted Risers are growing restless; he cannot afford to lose control of the situation after Soundwave's stunt, and orders Shockwave to bring his two lieutenants to the testing bay. When Slipstream and Sixshot arrive, Megatron informs them to watch as he puts his contingency plan in action, to better align the Ascenticons and The Rise... and promptly lays into Shockwave. Megatron's overfuelled state gives him a decisive advantage against his fuel-starved underling as he announces that the Rise is no more: now, there is only Megatron. Shattered by the ferocious attack, Shockwave immediately yields, and both of his lieutenants immediately fall in line with the new order.

Back in Iacon, Orion Pax and Chromia have presented their findings to Sentinel Prime, who gravely reflects on the news. For the time being, he decides, he will alter the Nominus Edict so that Security Operations can best capture Shockwave, Sixshot, Frenzy, Barricade, and Quake: law enforcement will enjoy unlimited energon and full access to all of Cybertron's weaponry... and while casualties should be avoided, the Prime stresses that success must be prioritized. Hound and Novastar will be deputized to oversee the manhunt.

Ignoring Orion and Chromia's protests, Sentinel informs them that they'll also need Ironhide on their side to coordinate the arrest and interrogation of Senator Soundwave. One way or another, Sentinel vows, they will end this here and now, no matter what it takes...

Continuity notes

The opening lines of Megatron's internal narration—"nobody sees the same things as anybody else"—echo his conversation with Orion Pax in issue #1 of Transformers.
Megatron was established to have once been a miner in issue #6; that issue mentioned that he had an interest in gladiatorial combat. In that same issue, Megatron mentioned his first bout in Iacon's new gladiatorial arena; evidently, as per narration in both this issue and issue #2 of Galaxies, those plans were kiboshed somewhat quickly, as the gladiatorial matches were declared illegal at some point.
Megatron's memories of the War of the Threefold Spark feature our first look at the mysterious Exarchon... or should we say, Exarchons? The "Threefold Spark" is revealed to be a more literal name than we first thought, with Exarchon apparently sharing one consciousness between at least three bodies and possibly more "iterations". Megatron's narration notes that he was apparently "corrupted" by something or someone while away from Cybertron, though it's not clear if this corruption merely altered his personality or mutated him on a more physical level.
The events Bumblebee speaks of occurred in the previous issue, though this issue doesn't make it clear which members of Ruckus's gang survived the explosion Soundwave triggered.
While we, the readers, have always known that it was Quake who killed Rubble back in issue #5, this is the first time that Bumblebee has found out about it; Quake abruptly went missing after that issue and has yet to reappear.
Megatron's third flashback is set between the first arc of Galaxies and the present day; Termagax had yet to found the Ascenticons during her time mentoring the Constructicons, and Galaxies issue #3 specifically featured her repeatedly clashing with Nominus Prime's Senate, which evidently discouraged her enough that she went into her self-imposed exile.
Barricade is settling into life as a Riser after his staged "abduction" from Iacon in issue #11.
Shockwave notes that his Risers are running low on fuel after the loss of their energon receiving array, which was destroyed by Chromia and Windblade in issue #10.
Shockwave mentions an offplanet network working to recruit exiled 'bots into The Rise; as per an editor's note, Bombshell and the other Insecticons are members of that network, and are, as of writing, working to turn the Constructicons in the pages of Galaxies.
So what is Shockwave working on in that Threefold Spark bunker? Exarchon's tripartite body sure is similar to Reflector's classic gimmick—and, as it so happens, Refraktor is a pretty prominent Ascenticon...
Megatron's flashback name-drops Ultra Magnus as a unit leader for the government during the war, and in the present day, Sentinel Prime laments that he cannot make use of the absent Magnus's martial expertise, foreshadowing Magnus's spotlight role in the upcoming fourth arc in Galaxies.

Transformers references

After receiving a minor role in issue #9, Headlock makes a cameo during the flashback to Megatron's gladiatorial days, in what is likely a reference to his animated counterpart's history as a crooked match-fixer.
In the same panel, Megatron is shown defeating Lugnut; that character was also introduced as a veteran of Cybertron's gladiatorial scene in 2010's Transformers: Exodus novel.
One of Exarchon's three bodies looks a lot like Twin Twist, with details specifically drawn to match his Titans Return toy. We don't know whether this was specified in the script, or just a cameo chosen by the artist.
Warpath's cameo in this issue features him shouting "Boom!" as he rescues Megatron from Exarchon, in what's likely a reference to his cartoon counterpart's verbal tic.
A Functionary appears on page 11 as a law enforcement officer supervising the closure of Megatron's old mine.
Shockwave mentions Triggerhappy as one of his Risers, dubbing him a maniac, which is very much in-keeping with his classic portrayal. Megatron also brings up a theory posited by noted intellectual Highbrow in the same conversation.
While line artist Anna Malkova initially planned to give Slipstream the same Siege body as other Seekers in this continuity, Hasbro asked for IDW Slipstream to take inspiration from the Cyberverse incarnation.<ref>{{#if: Initially I wanted to make Slipstream the same mold as siege seekers but was asked to make her look more like cbv so there's ques from both!
