Originally founded as a startup within Google in 2010, the company became independent in 2015, and has developed games such as Ingress, Harry Potter: Wizards Unite, Pikmin Bloom, and most famously, Pokémon Go.

In March 2025, Niantic sold their gaming division to Scopely for $3.5 billion, shifting their focus to developing real-world 3D maps.
