First revealed at New York Toy Fair 2018, Transformers Generations: Studio Series (aka Transformers: Studio Series), acts as a celebration under the Generations banner of over ten years of live-action movies, with characters from every movie represented. It also coincided with Bumblebee, the sixth film in the live-action film series.

Not above turning himself into a weapon and having somebody else swing him around, these are the Megatrons that are accessories for other toys!

Each figure from the Deluxe, Voyager, and Leader Class assortments is numbered, with an indication of their movie of origin. The same also applies to store exclusive figures and multi-packs. All figures also come with a cardboard backdrop–the eponymous "studio"fact–depicting a notable scene from their respective fictional appearance. In some instances, backdrops are repeated between separate figures representing the same scene. If those figures are released as part of different size classes, the backdrops are rescaled accordingly.

With rough robot mode scale as a line-wide goal, each figure is sized in relation to other toys, even in the same size class; 18 Deluxe Bumblebee is shorter than Jazz and 01 Bumblebee, who are in turn shorter than Ratchet and Lockdown.
: A diminutive version of Megatron in his Walther P-38 mode was included as a new accessory with the Transformers Collection release of Starscream. Needless to say, he doesn't transform, but can be held by Starscream in both modes. Megatron's handle disconnects to reveal a peg, which can then be inserted into either of Starscream's fists, which were specifically resculpted for this purpose. Each fist also features a tab on its underside, into which Megatron's handle can be inserted, completing the effect. Megatron can also attach to Starscream's jet mode; the right-hand side of Megatron's handle features a square peg which is designed to fit snugly in gaps in Starscream's pectorals, as in the Generation 1 episode, "S.O.S. Dinobots". Unfortunately, this peg has, for no fathomable reason, been cast in the same sky blue color as Starscream's hands, unnecessarily making it as obtrusive as humanly possible. An additional tabbed right fist for Optimus Prime (complementing his then-upcoming Transformers Collection Convoy release) was included as well.

The toyline boasts a greater accuracy than previous lines, due its focus on relative scale and its making use of CG models pulled from the films (or games) for reference (though this does fall short for early Bumblebee toys). Studio Series also explores toys for characters who had none before, or were left to a smaller size class.
: Megatron's post is compatible with 5mm post fist holes, provided there is sufficient clearance for both the trigger and the back of the gun, and if you don't mind not using the handle.

:20th Anniversary Optimus Prime included an accessory of Megatron in his classic Walther P-38 altmode. Although non-transforming, it is quite detailed and includes the individually removable silencer / barrel extension, scope, and (hinged) stock. Although notionally scaled to be wielded by Prime, Megatron is really rather small, so a diagonal sliding joint is added to his handle, allowing it to be lengthened and narrowed enough so that Prime can actually hold it. Both the stock and the sliding butt-end of the handle are made of a soft, rubbery vinyl, compared to the hard plastic of the other pieces. The stock extension connecting clamp is prone to breakage, much to the chagrin of owners who keep theirs sealed and untouched.

He was made available again without changes as an accessory for Takara's MP-4, "Convoy Perfect Edition" and MP-1L, "Convoy Last Production", and Hasbro's "DVD Edition", but has also been redecoed several times: these distinct new versions of Megatron are listed below.

Exclusives
::*More information on 20th Anniversary Optimus Prime at TFU.info
The earliest exclusives in Studio Series were hit hard by the bankruptcy of Toys"R"Us in several countries. Thundercracker was only available for a very short window at TRU, and only in store. Likewise, the Bumblebee/Charlie 2-pack was also intended for Toys"R"Us, but ultimately only released that way in Canada, which still had Toys"R"Us by the time it came out. Both releases were eventually made available through numerous online retailers such as BigBadToyStore, Entertainment Earth, ToyWiz, and TFSource.

The Bumblebee Then & Now Two-pack was exclusive to Target and BigBadToyStore in the United States and to Kmart in Australia; the Bumblebee Vol. 1 Retro Rock Garage set debuted at San Diego Comic-Con 2018 and was later also made available via Hasbro Toy Shop; and the Bumblebee Vol. 2 Retro Pop Highway set appears to have been an "online exclusive" shared between the same retailers that offered Thundercracker and Bumblebee/Charlie.  We say "appear" because the Retro Pop Highway set was also available at GameStop stores in the United States, and both sets were also listed in Diamond Comic Distributors' Previews catalog, so really the only "exclusivity" for these appears to be that neither of them is available from Walmart or Target.

:Offered as part of a Lucky Draw campaign in August 2004, this extremely rare version of Masterpiece Prime is almost entirely vacuum-metalized gold, lacking any other painted detail or stickers. :The version of Megatron included with this black redeco of Prime—representing a mass-produced Eldedroid—was much the same as the original accessory, but with dark metallic silver paint.
As with the previous year's Vol. 2 Retro Pop Highway, the Drift and Baby Dinobots set was available from multiple online retailers. Battle Damaged Megatron was first found stocked by Hong Kong shops, long before it was available both online and in store at Toys"R"Us in Canada and Target in the U.S.

"As Seen In Parks" Megatron was officially exclusive to Universal Studios, but was released (almost a year after he had been officially revealed) in Hasbro's Asian markets first. Due to the global COVID-19 pandemic, the toy was only released exclusively to online retailers in the U.S.

In late 2020, Studio Series started to include the additions of characters from The Transformers: The Movie, in celebration of the film's 35th anniversary. These toys feature a separate numbering system in Hasbro markets that utilizes "86" before the number of the respective figure. The '86 figures follow the same style, scale and play pattern of those from the concurrently-ran War for Cybertron Trilogy toylines, complete with Fire Blast effects and 5 mm ports that can support [[C.O.M.B.A.T. :A repaint and retool of the Megatron gun originally included with MP-01 and his redecos, the Megatron gun included with MP-13 Soundwave has been retooled in response to the breakage issues the original version suffered from. Both the sliding butt-end of the handle and the stock have been molded in hard plastic instead of the soft rubbery vinyl of the MP-01 version. A joint has been added to the stock connection point on the handle; for the joint in the stock itself, a straight pin has replaced the original rivet-style pin the softer plastic required. The stock itself no longer emulates the transforming accessory from the G1 toy, and instead features a smaller cylindrical shaft that more closely resembles the original U.N.C.L.E Special. In terms of deco, the minute red paint application on the scope is omitted.

2020 saw the release of Leadfoot at Target, the enormous Devastator box set at multiple retailers, and the beginnings of the Buzzworthy Bumblebee line in celebration of everybody's favourite little yellow Autobot.  Toys in the latter line are earmarked by the addition of "BB" to their ID numbers.

Exclusives
:When reissued by Hasbro Asia in 2016, Masterpiece Laserwave included a non-transforming diecast Megatron gun accessory which could be held by Laserwave. The accessory is similar, but not identical, to the Megatron gun included with MP-01/MP-13. Of particular note, the very detailed single-piece accessory is sculpted with the barrel extension and scope, but not the stock, and features the loop/swirl pattern found on the original toy's robot mode chest.
The Buzzworthy Bumblebee line further expanded in 2021 to include multi-packs. Target also reissued Battle Damaged Megatron and the Then & Now Two-Pack.

2022
:The all-new-for-2021 Masterpiece Starscream includes his own Megatron gun mode accessory, produced without a removable scope or stock. Megatron can peg underneath Starscream's fuselage in his vehicle mode, or his handle can extend for Starscream to wield him in robot mode.
In 2022, Studio Series adopted the Core Class price point that debuted in the Kingdom line, producing both characters too small for Deluxe Class as well as pocket-sized versions of the main cast liken in days of yore. Notably, unlike the larger figures in the line, the toys in the Core Class are not numbered.

Core Class
2023
ClubCrossover
Studio Series expanded in scope in 2023, not only with toys for Rise of the Beasts–the first new Transformers movie since the line's early days–but also into the world of the War for Cybertron video game.  Toys from the latter imprint feature a seperate numbering system that we've chosen to represent as beginning with a plus (+), though the actual toy packaging stylises the symbol as a little D-pad. Neat!

Exclusives
:It should be noted that this is the first Generations toy to depict his alt mode as a gun, albeit in a non-converting accessory form.  It was soon followed by the Kingdom Core Class toy below.
There were further releases in Buzzworthy Bumblebee this year, some of which continued the range of NEST-themed redecoes, and none of which were released in waves or regular assortments.

*Starscream (Walmart exclusive reissue/redeco, 2023)

TakaraTomy Studio Series toyline
:Walmart once again reissued the original Starscream toy in 2023–now in more cartoon accurate colours–under the Transformers Retro label. He retains the gun mode Megatron accessory first included with The Transformers Collection Starscream.
Similar to Power of the Primes, in Takara's Transformers Studio Series (トランスフォーマー スタジオシリーズ Toransufōmā Sutajio Shirīzu) line, all figures are identical to their Hasbro counterparts, forgoing Takara's past practice of using more movie-accurate paint jobs. This is most likely due to the line being an official collaboration between Hasbro and TakaraTomy, much like the Masterpiece Movie Series line. ID numbering differs after number 8 compared to the Hasbro release, since some of the exclusives are not released in Japan. Introduced to the line in 2021, Takara includes characters from The Transformers: The Movie in its pre-existing Studio Series numbering system, whereas Hasbro assigns them ID numbers prefixed by "86". Takara also assigns ID numbers to Core Class figures, which go unnumbered in Hasbro markets. From wave 4 through wave 12, the packages featured the franchise's 35th anniversary logo.

In 2021, Takara decided to go back to its old ways and launched the exclusive Premium Finish toyline, featuring rereleases of some Studio Series figures with much more movie-accurate decoes.
:Unlike the original versions of Starscream's fists from The Transformers Collection reissue, the fists from this version are cast in black plastic and painted blue. The added paint makes the post on the bottom of his fists thicker than they should be, so attaching the lower portion of the Megatron gun can be difficult.

*Studio Series can be considered a "sister series" to Hasbro's Star Wars: The Black Series and Marvel Studios: The First Ten Years, which are based around a similar concept and feature a similar overall packaging design.

*In July 2017, photos of a computer screen taken during an internal Hasbro presentation were leaked to the public that revealed, among other things, the very existence of the Studio Series general retail line-up, though not the actual title "Studio Series" yet (which was later revealed through separate leaks). The fact that the slides incorrectly featured projected release dates for "2017" instead of 2018 (which included dates predating the leak) led some fans to assume that the still unannounced line-up had long since been canceled. It wouldn't be until several leaks later that Hasbro finally acknowledged the existence of the Studio Series line, and revealed the first few waves during New York Toy Fair 2018, even offering a limited quantity of the first wave of Deluxe Class figures as an early release through the Hasbro Toy Shop website. Simultaneously, TakaraTomy revealed their version of the line at Wonder Festival Winter 2018.
*Among the figures whose existence was revealed through the aforementioned July 2017 leak that were not officially unveiled at Toy Fair was Voyager Class Ironhide, who made his worldwide debut at retail in Singapore in June 2018. Subsequently, Hasbro announced the redeco of Voyager Class Starscream (based on his appearance in Revenge of the Fallen), the final figure revealed through the July 2017 leak, via their "Hasbro Pulse" Instagram account a few days before San Diego Comic-Con, even though they still hadn't officially acknowledged the existence of Ironhide by that point.
* Like with previous movie-based lines, Studio Series also assigned code names to at least some of its characters. This time, the "theme" for those code names was "Australian race horses":

:The code names of many of the other figures, assuming they even had code names, are still unknown, as those toys have (thus far) consistently been listed under their actual characters' names. Meanwhile, a listing for a supposed Voyager Class figure using the code name "Destroyer" later turned out to be a mislabeled Energon Igniters Speed Series Barricade from the Bumblebee movie toy line, with which the Studio Series shares its code names.
*A few of the Voyagers and Deluxes of the previous two movie toylines scale fairly well with Studio Series figures. The latter of the two toylines, The Last Knight, seems to have a greater tie-in to the Studio Series lineup, as a few molds were also redecoed in this toyline as well as a few retools. Furthermore, the static figurine of Quintessa scales perfectly among these molds and also seems to serve as an inspiration for later pack-in figurines like Wheelie, Brains and the Mini Dinobots.
*Certain figures reuse packaging artwork from the last two movie toylines, as well as promotional renders for the first three films. There are also some artwork that retools existing renders for better screen accuracy.
*One of the biggest misconceptions surrounding the Studio Series toyline is that there is a subline called "Studio Series 86". This came about from leaked listings on Walmart's website where the number "86" was misinterpreted as part of the toyline's title, rather than the ID numbers of those toys. While the toys based on characters from the 1986 movie do feature a separate numbering system, the line itself doesn't acknowledge them as being any different from the live-action movie toys they are sold alongside.
**While it has never been confirmed, the move to include 1986 characters in the Studio Series toyline after three years of continuous focus on the live-action films, was likely done to allow Hasbro and TakaraTomy to celebrate the 35th anniversary of the film, without stepping on the toes of the Beast Wars 25th anniversary, which was celebrated as a part of the War for Cybertron Trilogy. Evidence suggesting this is the inclusion of some of the film's main characters (Cyclonus, Rodimus Prime and Galvatron) being sold in the concurrently-ran Kingdom toyline and the shared design aesthetics of the toys between both lines.

Not above turning himself into a weapon and having somebody else swing him around, these are the Megatrons that are accessories for other toys!

The Transformers Collection

[edit]

Sometimes I just... want to be held.
  • Starscream (Transformers Collection, 2003)
    • ID number: 9
A diminutive version of Megatron in his Walther P-38 mode was included as a new accessory with the Transformers Collection release of Starscream.
Megatron's post is compatible with 5mm post fist holes, provided there is sufficient clearance for both the trigger and the back of the gun, and if you don't mind not using the handle.

Masterpiece

[edit]

Bang bang! He shot me down! Bang bang! I hit the ground...
  • Optimus Prime (2003/2004)
    • ID number: MP-1
    • Accessories: Scope, silencer, stock
20th Anniversary Optimus Prime included an accessory of Megatron in his classic Walther P-38 altmode.
Needless to say, the later-released Masterpiece Starscream (and his redecoes) can also hold this version of Megatron, and each include a small round clip that plugs in under their nosecones, allowing them to wield Megatron while in jet mode, as Starscream did in "S.O.S. Dinobots".
As the Masterpiece Optimus Prime mold has been has re-released multiple times, so too has Megatron. He was made available again without changes as an accessory for Takara's MP-4, "Convoy Perfect Edition" and MP-1L, "Convoy Last Production", and Hasbro's "DVD Edition", but has also been redecoed several times: these distinct new versions of Megatron are listed below.

This thing was badass in GoldenEye.
  • Convoy (Lucky Draw Figure, 2004)
    • ID number: MP-1
    • Accessories: Scope, silencer, stock
Offered as part of a Lucky Draw campaign in August 2004, this extremely rare version of Masterpiece Prime is almost entirely vacuum-metalized gold, lacking any other painted detail or stickers. The same is true of the Megatron accessory, who is all chromed golden save for the butt of his handle and his stock, which are metallic golden plastic.

  • Ultra Magnus (2004)
    • ID number: MP-2
    • Accessories: Scope, silencer, stock
When Masterpiece Optimus Prime was recolored to become Ultra Magnus, Megatron received a new coat of paint as well: the black and brown color scheme of his Micro Change progenitor, which had previously been used on the e-HOBBY exclusive "Megatron Black Version".

... Don't suppose these are Megaplexes now, are they?
  • Convoy Black Ver. (November 21, 2009)
    • ID number: MP-1B
    • Accessories: Scope, silencer, stock
The version of Megatron included with this black redeco of Prime—representing a mass-produced Eldedroid—was much the same as the original accessory, but with dark metallic silver paint.

Now even more breakable!
  • Convoy Sleep Mode (June 2010)
    • ID number: MP-4S
    • Accessories: Scope, silencer, stock
Just as this release of Optimus Prime was recolored in the faded black and grey hues of he took on with his death in The Transformers: The Movie, so too did his Megatron accessory get a movie-themed makeover: this Megatron is cast entirely in translucent purple plastics, evoking the scene of his transformation into Galvatron from the film, in which he is first reduced to a transparent purple wireframe model.

  • Soundwave (January 26, 2013)
    • ID number: MP-13
    • Accessories: Scope, silencer, stock
A repaint and retool of the Megatron gun originally included with MP-01 and his redecos, the Megatron gun included with MP-13 Soundwave has been retooled in response to the breakage issues the original version suffered from.

  • Soundwave (2013)
    • ID number: MP-02
    • 09 OF 30
    • Accessories: Scope, silencer, stock
The Hasbro version of Masterpiece Soundwave also comes with the Megatron gun. It is seemingly unchanged.

Now in cherry flavor.
  • Soundblaster (February 22, 2014)
    • ID number: MP-13B
    • Accessories: Scope, silencer, stock
A repaint and retool of the Megatron gun originally included with MP-01 and his redecos, the Megatron gun included with MP-13B Soundblaster features the same retooling as the version released with MP-13 Soundwave, although this time the pieces are cast in translucent red plastic. The only paint application is a silver Decepticon symbol.

  • Skywarp (January 2015)
    • ID number: MP-11SW
    • Accessories: Scope, silencer, stock
The Asia only MP-11 version of Skywarp comes with the original MP-1 version of the Megatron gun.

  • Destron Laserwave (March 26, 2016)
    • ID number: MP-29
    • Accessories: Left and right fists, translucent right fist, gun barrel (opaque and translucent), saluting right hand (opaque and translucent), "Laser Vulcan", stand, die-cast Megatron Gun accessory (Asia reissue)
When reissued by Hasbro Asia in 2016, Masterpiece Laserwave included a non-transforming diecast Megatron gun accessory which could be held by Laserwave. The accessory is similar, but not identical, to the Megatron gun included with MP-01/MP-13. Of particular note, the very detailed single-piece accessory is sculpted with the barrel extension and scope, but not the stock, and features the loop/swirl pattern found on the original toy's robot mode chest.

The all-new-for-2021 Masterpiece Starscream includes his own Megatron gun mode accessory, produced without a removable scope or stock. Megatron can peg underneath Starscream's fuselage in his vehicle mode, or his handle can extend for Starscream to wield him in robot mode.
Despite a history of many Masterpiece Starscreams and many gun mode Megatron accessories, this is the first time that a Masterpiece Starscream has actually included a Megatron!

MP-52 Starscream's redeco Skywarp also includes the same Megatron accessory, now painted in a slightly darker grey.

G.I. Joe and the Transformers

[edit]
That's nice, but where's the Joey Slick figure?
  • Starscream Sky Striker (XP-21F) with Cobra Commander (2011)
Produced exclusively for San Diego Comic-Con 2011, this redeco of the G.I. Joe Sky Striker jet plane into Starscream colors comes with a 3.75" Cobra Commander pilot figure, among whose accessories is a non-transforming gun mode Megatron.

  • G.I. Joe featuring Ninja Force and Transformers (2017)
A redeco of the above gun mode Megatron accessory was included as part of a G2 crossover set sold by Fun Publications, again for use with Cobra Commander.

Vintage G1

[edit]
  • Starscream (exclusive reissue, 2018)
A slight redeco of the Megatron accessory that came with the Takara The Transformers Collection Starscream reissue, this version of Megatron was included with the Walmart exclusive G1 Starscream reissue under the Vintage G1 label.

Generations: War for Cybertron Trilogy

[edit]
Are you sure it's not an upside-down submarine?
  • Deluxe Centurion Drone (Deluxe Class with accessories pack, 2020)
An accessory of Megatron's pistol form is available as part of the War for Cybertron Trilogy Deluxe Centurion Drone Weaponizer Pack. It also comes with a silencer, but does not include the stock. In Japan, the toy was released as a TakaraTomy Mall exclusive for Earthrise.[1]
It should be noted that this is the first Generations toy to depict his alt mode as a gun, albeit in a non-converting accessory form. It was soon followed by the Kingdom Core Class toy below.

Transformers Retro

[edit]
  • Starscream (Walmart exclusive reissue/redeco, 2023)
Walmart once again reissued the original Starscream toy in 2023–now in more cartoon accurate colours–under the Transformers Retro label. He retains the gun mode Megatron accessory first included with The Transformers Collection Starscream.
Unlike the original versions of Starscream's fists from The Transformers Collection reissue, the fists from this version are cast in black plastic and painted blue. The added paint makes the post on the bottom of his fists thicker than they should be, so attaching the lower portion of the Megatron gun can be difficult.
  • Thundercracker (Walmart exclusive reissue/redeco, 2023)
The same Megatron accessory was included with Retro Thundercracker a few months later with no notable changes.
