Fool! To a master of Metal—oh my god, guys, JOLT HAS DIALOGUE!

Culture Shock

[edit]

In Los Angeles, NEST and the Autobots are attempting to bring in the Decepticon Reverb... except Jolt just made his attack early (and through a dude's house no less)! Ironhide angrily radios in and tells him that instead of blocking off the enemy's escape route, he's just spooked him. Jolt, obliviously causing greater chaos than the Con as he tears around the streets, says he'll just drive the cycle towards NEST's roadblock. When it's pointed out the idea was to use traffic diversions to isolate the baddie from other traffic and avoid collateral damage, Jolt asks what collateral damage is.

When NEST notices Reverb is changing his direction, Bumblebee is tasked to intercept him at North Rodeo and Carmelita. Jolt calls in to say he's still on Reverb's tail (ignoring roads and traffic laws makes things so much quicker!), and merrily transforms to unleash his electro-whips... which miss the target, hit a power line instead, and blow out electrics and windows across the area. "Oops." While he's left mortified, Bumblebee successfully takes down the Decepticon by ramming him.

At Andrew's Air Force Base, California, an irate Theodore Galloway informs Lennox that repairing all the damage and paying off civil suits will cost ten million. Optimus Prime apologises for involving Jolt, still a non-sanctioned new recruit, in the mission, but Galloway doesn't care... in fact, Prime helped him, as this mess gives him all the ammo he needs to convince the Pentagon to drop NEST! Jolt apologises to Prime for getting carried away; the leader understands, but tells Jolt he needs to restrain this exuberance, as Earth is not built for beings like them. Jolt promises he'll do better...

Two days later, in Las Vegas, Jolt has jumped the gun again to engage Bludgeon. This goes very badly: his whip is destroyed, he's thrown through a casino wall, and Bludgeon begins to deliberately fire on the civilians inside to force Jolt to shield them. Enraged by this treatment of innocent life, Jolt takes the fight to Bludgeon and decries him for not caring who gets hurt... but the villain points out that the Autobot could have just waited for him to get what he'd come for, then engage him in the desert. Is he impulsive... or does he just like an audience?

Jolt admits this is pretty insightful, but Bludgeon missed out one thing about him: his whole body is one big power cell, and he was holding back before. Now, he grabs Bludgeon's sword, eats up Vegas's electricity, and then sends it surging back into Bludgeon! The Decepticon is defeated... and the city suffers a blackout. "Oops."

Later, a disappointed Optimus has Jolt confined to base until further notice: he can't afford more loose cannons. Knowing he screwed up and almost got people killed by not following protocol, Jolt accepts this... but then, at the base, NEST Watch-Seven calls in, requesting urgent assistance against an unknown Transformer...

Quotes

[edit]

"Collateral damage? What's that?"

Jolt, while crashing through someone's stuff

"Frankly, Optimus Prime... I don't care. In fact, you've done me a favour. I've been looking for an excuse to shut you down... Ever since Captain Lennox threw me out of a plane."

Galloway should not smile again, it's creepy

"You'll see, Prime... I'll be the soul of discretion."
Caption: Las Vegas, Nevada. Two days later
"C'mon! Bring it on! Give it your best shot you darn dirty 'Con!"

Jolt apparently has a short-term memory

"You know what I like about this planet?"
"The self-service fuel pumps?"
"The sheer proliferation of organic life. They're all over the place, swarming and massing in every nook and cranny. And you Autobots actually seem to care what happens to them. And we don't."

Bludgeon tries dirty tricks against Jolt

Errors

[edit]
  • Optimus confines Jolt to NEST's California base. You'd think it'd make more sense to send him to Diego Garcia, where it'd be harder for him to bunk off!

Notes

[edit]
  • Jolt is doing stuff. Now that's worth noting!
  • Reverb goes unnamed, unspoken, and stays in vehicle mode during his scene.
  • Post-movie, Bumblebee is back on active operations.
  • What a hell does Bludgeon seek in Las-Vegas? The Matrix of Leadership had been found long ago…

Build a Bot!

[edit]

The back cover of the comic (both sides) have space for you to draw your own Autobot and Decepticon, and then give them a little bio. Cut the back cover off (or download a form at their website) and send it to Titan. Why? Because the best Autobot and best Decepticon will get their own two-page strip in a later issue where they fight each other! "How cool is THAT???"

Law and Disorder

[edit]

"As for defecting, I don't think I could bear Optimus' hair-braiding moralising and turgid, touchy-feely nobility. Everyone knows bad guys are more popular and he's the reason why."

Barricade

"You're just a blunt instrument!"
"Ah, thanks, Barricade. I think that's the nicest thing you've ever said about me."
"I didn't mean it as a compliment... oh, never mind!

Barricade and Ironhide

Fan: "What was Jazz thinking when he went up against Megatron?"
Barricade: "Probably, 'Urgh, there go my legs. Oh wait-'"

Fan: "Why doesn't Ironhide just blow off Barricade's head and run the letters column by himself?"
Barricade: "That's a good question..."

Starscream's stars

[edit]

"VIRGO (23 AUG - 22 SEPT): Many roads open before you, leaving you many choices. Looks like the satnav is on the fritz again."

"LIBRA (23 SEPT - 23 OCT): Sticks and stones may break your adamantium combat chassis, but names will never hurt you. Sadly, you didn't see those giant neon letters spelling DAVE falling off that building."

"AIRES (20 JAN - 18 FEB): Manners cost nothing, so why would you try selling them on Ebay [sic], you idiot?"

Errors

[edit]
  • To wear the Optimus mask, you have to cut up the front cover! Noooooo!

Notes

[edit]
  • First issue of a new format: the reprints are gone, the page count is down to 34, and the taller-than-pages cardboard cover from #7 is back.
