* Oy, that name. This is gonna take some 'splainin'. "Wuji" is meant to be evocative of "W.J." in Japanese. However, a full pronunciation of "Double-u Jay" (ダブリュージェイ) would cause the name to be too long, so they decided to represent the "W" sound with a long "u" sound, as they lack a "wu" phoneme, and "J" with "ji", the simplest character with that sound. Basically, it's trying -as best as katakana can approximate- the phonetic sounds the two letters make as a single "word".

Wuji is an Autobot Mini-Con from the Prime portion of the Aligned continuity family.

Wuji (ウージ Ūji) is Wheeljack's Arms Micron partner. He's an inventor with a weakness for bad jokes.

Fiction

[edit]

Prime cartoon

[edit]
Wuji only appears as an actual character in the Arms Micron Theater segments of the Japanese broadcast of Prime. Technically, he appears in the main cartoon any time Wheeljack uses his swords, but we're not going to bother with that and just focus on his individual exploits.
Voice actor: Yūki Tai (Japanese)

While training with B.H. at the Arms Micron-style Weapon Link Dojo, Wuji took a break to tell his sparring partner some puns comparing the Autobots' names to similar-sounding Japanese words. Explosive Sword Transformation! Wheeljack and Dreadwing As the year was drawing to a close, Wuji declared that next year he was going to invent an amazing weapon for defeating the Decepticons. O.P. and B.B. suggested he build a giant Optimus Prime-like mech that could transform into a mobile base for the Arms Microns to ride, an idea which got him increasingly excited up until B.B. added that it should be the size of Mount Fuji. While Wuji rejected this impossible demand, O.P. was still confident that he could do it if he got a new year's present of about four million yen or so. Freezing Transformation! Obtain the Invincible Body!

A powered-up golden Wuji formed the blade of the Advanced Star Saber during a battle with the Decepticons' Gravity Planet Bowgun. Sonic Transformation! Ratchet's Recipe He also made up one end of the Matrix Double Saber. Toxic Flame Transformation! Hardshell, King of the Insects Alongside 16 other Arms Microns, he attended the reveal of the results of a recent popularity contest in which he came in 12th place. Sky Dance Transformation! The Suicidal Skydive On the final episode of Arms Micron Theater, Wuji joined the rest of the Arms Microns in saying goodbye to their viewers. Ultimate Transformation! Fight! Transformers

Part of the seventh wave of TakaraTomy Prime toys, Wuji is available only with his larger partner, Wheeljack. He comes as an unassembled, unpainted "kit", using stickers for detail, and transforms from a humanoid robot into... uh... a box with a sword-blade sticking out of it. Awkward. He has numerous 5mm posts and holes that allow him to combine with other Arms Microns to form any number of "Combo Weapons" and "Super Combo Weapons".
Care needs to be taken with his shoulder stickers, as they are applied to a slick curved surface, and the adhesive is... not great at handling that kind of thing, with the thickness of the label fighting the bend it has to take to stay affixed. No, the real deal doesn't look quite like this. We're working on it.
  • Arms Micron Ultimate 5 Piece Set A - Advanced Star Saber (AMW set, 2012)
  • Set ID number: AMW-13
  • Release date: December 28, 2012
  • Energon Crystal: AP Shield
A semi-transparent-yellow version of Wuji, dubbed Wuji G, was part of a five-piece gift set of Autobot-allied Arms Microns, which also included B.B. R, O.P. R, Iro R, and R.A. O. All five can combine to form a gigantic combination weapon, the Advanced Star Saber. And yes, this version has the same issue with the shoulder-stickers.
Both solicitation photos and final package photography depict this version of Wuji as an opaque greenish-mustardy color.

Notes

[edit]
  • "Wuji" is meant to be evocative of "W.J." in Japanese. However, a full pronunciation of "Double-u Jay" (ダブリュージェイ) would cause the name to be too long, so the writers decided to represent the "W" sound with a long "u" sound, as Japanese lacks a "wu" phoneme, and "J" with "ji", the simplest character with that sound. Basically, "Wuji", as "Ūji", ties the sounds of the "W" and the "J" into a single "word".
  • To go with Wheeljack's samurai theme in the Japanese dub, Wuji speaks in a dialect associated with Edokko, long-time natives of Tokyo (formerly Edo).
