Jay Bacal is the son of Griffin Bacal chairman Joe Bacal. He is often credited as having come up with the name Transformers, and he also served as the creative director on The Transformers cartoon. When Ron Friedman turned in the first script for The Transformers: The Movie, Bacal and Flint Dille regarded it as "incoherent" and collaborated on "The Secret of Cybertron", though that script was also shelved.

In addition to Transformers, Jay Bacal worked on many of the other Marvel Productions shows of the era, including G.I. Joe, Jem, My Little Pony, Visionaries, Bucky O'Hare and the Toad Wars!, Inhumanoids, and Littlest Pet Shop.
