At 8am on July 4th 1986, as Ricky Vasquez was preparing to leave for work at the Hoover dam hydroelectric plant, he was injected with a cerebro-shell by the Decepticon Bombshell in insect mode. Brushing it off as an ordinary insect bite, he promised his daughter Maria that he would be back home in time to take her to see the celebratory fireworks that evening, said goodbye to his wife and drove away. Shortly afterwards the cerebro-shell took control of Ricky's mind and Bombshell directed him to pull his car over to where Megatron, Shrapnel and Kickback were waiting to hitch a ride. Upon his arrival at the plant Ricky walked past the security guard while carrying gun-mode Megatron in his hand and made his way to the control room where Kickback removed the door from its hinges. Speaking like Shatner, Vasquez ordered the terrified workers to turn off the dam and once this was achieved the Decepticons dropped any pretence of deception, speaking to each other in front of the humans while Ricky remained silent. However, the shell's control over Ricky was not complete; he heard and understood Megatron's prediction that Earth would be turned into a wasteland. Outside, the space bridge had materialised, bringing with it from Cybertron the Coneheads and a gigantic drill to leech the dam's power. The Aerialbots arrived and joined in battle with the Decepticons, ultimately routing Megatron's forces, and combined into Superion to destroy the drill.
