Metascan Alpha is the planet of the Logicons, an ancient race who fought the Destructons eons ago. It has vast stores of energon.

Following the original defeat of the Destructons and their imprisonment in a dimensional barrier, the Logicons left a warning beacon nearby detailing the location of Metascan Alpha. When the Destructons were eventually released, the beacon's recording found its way into the hands of the Autobots, who sent out two teams in search of the planet.
Ultra Magnus's team ended up on a desolate moon orbiting a planet they believed to be Metascan Alpha, but when they flew down to check it out, they found a city under attack by the Destructons. A battle briefly raged before the Autobots realised that they were outclassed and began a retreat. It was only through the heroic sacrifice of Kup that they made it off the planet. - It is entirely unclear whether the planet which Ultra Magnus and his men find is actually Metascan Alpha. Although Ultra Magnus seems to think they've found what they're looking for, the inhabitants do not seem to resemble Logicons as shown in the recording.
