Starscream's crown was the one he wore at his coronation in The Transformers: the Movie, along with a long cape. As such, it has been referenced again and again.

Unusual (though appropriate for the pompous Starscream), as Transformers don't tend to wear clothes. It was uncertain if his garb was merely for the occasion or if he intended to walk around with that stuff on all the time.

Reason: Pointless.

A crown is an item of clothing worn on the head, used to indicate authority. Usually made of valuable metals, a typical crown is circular in shape and fits around the scalp. Most have various spikes and projections extending above the wearer to add height, and it is common for them to be studded with precious gems.

Fiction

Generation 1

Cartoon continuity

At the coronation of Starscream as leader of the Decepticons, he wore a cape and was crowned by Astrotrain. This was seconds before Galvatron crashed in with his troops and disintegrate Starscream with a blast from his cannon mode. The crown was the only thing to remain intact, toppling down the stars of the stage before being crushed under the foot of Galvatron. The Transformers: The Movie

Starscream got too close to the Decepticon BBQ.

This was unusual (though appropriate for the pompous Starscream), as Transformers don't tend to wear clothes. It was uncertain if his garb was merely for the occasion or if he intended to walk around with that stuff on all the time.

Genesis: The Art of Transformers

As an art-book concerned more with portraiture than storytelling, Genesis is of dubious relevance as a source of fiction. However, a picture of Machine Wars Starscream does suggest events outside itself. The artist intended it to be a sequel to a piece of his fanart.
Bringing a cannon to a canon-fight.

Machine Wars Starscream stood on the dais where he was once crowned leader of the Decepticons, which had since begun glowing with the energy of Cybertron's new golden age. As before, he wore a purple cape, but this time he brandished the vanquished Galvatron's torn-off cannon.

Marvel Comics continuity

Me Grimlock am too badass for just one crown.

Upon being appointed leader of the Autobots King of the Hill!, Grimlock's first act was to have a selection of crowns made. However, when Goldbug and Blaster told him that they had failed to apprehend the Mechanic, he smashed two of them in a rage, leaving just the one on his head Mechanical Difficulties!.

Unicron trilogy

Cybertron cartoon

Go on, just try to smash this one!

After absorbing some of the power of Primus and growing to colossal size, Starscream declared himself emperor of the universe. As a sign of his imperiality, he brought up a gigantic crown from within the volcano where he had established his base Starscream.

Just keep it away from any reformatted megalomaniacs.
Starscream is a highly articulated, non-transforming action figure. He comes with removable shoulder pads and cloak. He has a choice of normal head or a head with a crown. He also includes extra hands, one of which holds Megatron in gun mode.
  • Coronation Starscream (Diamond Select, 2008)
Coronation Starscream? This is bad comedy.
Released by Diamond Select Toys in 2008, Coronation Starscream was an exclusive to on-line retailer Action Figure Xpress. He was sculpted by Mark Wong of Art Asylum and limited to 600 pieces. It features Starscream decked out in the royal crown, cape, and big honkin' shoulder pads he wore (albeit briefly) in The Transformers: The Movie.

Trivia

The 2005 Supreme class Starscream toy from the Cybertron line comes with his own crown as a homage to his G1 counterpart. It is pretty much a dead ringer for the original.
