I don't really see the resemblance to the XF5U (removed the reference - if you put it back, can you point out what's so similar?). I could've sworn I saw a German prototype or design study that looked like Highbrow's vehicle mode, but can't find anything on Luft 46 that matches. :To me the cockpit set up being so far back is more reminiscent of the [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/XF5F Grumman XF5F Skyrocket] than anything else. But even that is tenuous.
