Trans-phase mode (トランスフェイズ・モード Toransufeizu mōdo) is the nebulous, nanite-like form that Sideways and other agents of Unicron sometimes take. Whether it be a nanite cloud, a static-textured tentacle, or his appearance projected onto the sky, it doesn't matter. Regardless of the form, you can't destroy them! Even if you hack them into tiny pieces.
Fiction
Armada cartoon
After it was revealed that Sideways was not working for the Decepticons, Sideways fled, but was soon cut down by Megatron, who was wielding the Star Saber. However, he quickly showed that it had no effect on ending his existence, as he used his Trans-phase mode to repair himself, change shape, and escape.
Animated
When Sideways was a prisoner on board the Axalon, he was able to break free of his restraints due to his Trans-Phase Generator and sabotage the ship. Transformers Animated: The AllSpark Almanac II
