Bulkhead encounters life-threatening danger during the last relic hunt.

Synopsis

Megatron sends Hardshell and a group of Insecticons to find the fourth and final relic that was recoded from the ship. Bulkhead, meanwhile, was rendezvous in a volcanic area within the equator to search for the final relic. While looking around, Hardshell runs into Bulkhead and, after a brief exchange of words, start fighting. Hardshell was knocked out by the Wrecker, losing a mandible in the process. Bulkhead transforms to go downhill, realizing that an old lava flow may have taken the relic in the same direction. Hardshell and the Insecticons go to find the relic. Though leaking energon from his fight, Bulkhead manages to find the relic , which turns out to be Toxic Energon called Tox-En. After reporting its fatal effects to Fowler and Raf, he decides to put a bomb on some of the Tox-En while taking the rest.

Hardshell and the other Insecticons find it shortly after, but one of them gets bombed and dyed from the trap Bulkhead set. Bulkhead runs uphill to the volcano to destory the Tox-En, leaving a false trail for the Insecticons to find. Fowler and the Wrecker start up a conversation about their past war-time careers, and realize how much alike they really are. However, as Bulkhead continues his journey, he begins to feel the effects of the toxic energon and almost succumbs to its spark-sapping properties. After Agent Fowler convinces him to keep going, for the sake of duty and family (namely Miko), Bulkhead trudges on.

Meanwhile, Hardshell figures out the false trail and he and the other Insecticons fly uphill. They catch up to Bulkhead, who had just arrived at the volcano's mouth. Bulkhead throws a bomb to one Insecticon and shoves some of the Tox-En to the other. Hardshell and Bulkhead fight again, both now weakened from the contaminated energon. Bulkhead manages to punch Hardshell over to the Tox-En, and then towards the lava hole. Throwing the Tox-En to Hardshell, Bulkhead makes Hardshell fall into the volcano, destroying the Tox-En. As Bulkhead heads for the Groundbridge, Hardshell climbs out of the volcano and shoots Bulkhead at the back, causing the Wrecker to go flying through and to the ground at the Autobot base, his back burning. Ratchet, Raf, and Fowler see the smoke coming out of Bulkhead's back and run to his aid.

Quotes

"I can has cheeseburger!"

— Yes, Agent Fowler actually said that.

"Leave it to Megatron to send a bug to do his dirty work." "You would know a thing or two about dirty work yourself, Wrecker."

- Hardshell sending a 'right-back-at-you' at Bulkhead.

"Now, you see the thing about bugs your size: you make a bigger mess when I SMASH 'EM!"

- Bulkhead being true to his wrecking nature.

Notes

Animation and technical errors

  • Both of Bulkhead's maces silently transform as he is first fighting Hardshell.
  • In "Triangulation" Bulkhead is shown running through the groundbridge for his mission. However, in this episode he is shown just walking through the bridge.

Continuity notes

  • This is the final episode of the four-part relic-hunting arc, which all happen concurrently. This episode focuses on Bulkhead and Fowler. Fowler's handling of Vogel in "Tunnel Vision" and the Antarctic research base in "Triangulation" are shown from his point of view. Raf is also seen programming the virus that Ratchet installs in Laserbeak in "Triage". The ending scene is the same as in "Triage".
  • Fowler makes mention of his old Army Ranger days, which he first mentioned in "Nemesis Prime".
  • Bulkhead flashes back to numerous episodes from the first season, first to battle scenes, then to scenes with Miko.

Transformers references

  • Hardshell is the modern name for the G1 Insecticon Bombshell.
  • Hardshell says, 'Yesss'.
  • The fight in the volcano's mouth reflects Cybertronians being able to survive physical contact with molten lava, as well as total submersion.

Real-world references

  • While still recovering from the events of dark energon from a previous episode, Fowler blurts out "I can has cheeseburger"; which is a popular cat-based internet meme.

Trivia

  • While in the past the Wreckers have generally been a small, closely-knit unit (despite their horrific attrition rates), Hardshell noting he's faced Wreckers numerous times suggests the team is much larger in the Aligned continuity.
  • This is the second time the Insecticons speak, but the first to hold conversation. For vermin, they must be smarter than they look.
