On the surface, one would think that Copperhead is nothing more than an adrenaline junkie who gets his fix through boat racing. This would be a fair assessment, as he is quite skilled as a pilot and is intimately familiar with much of the Florida Everglades. But in reality, Copperhead's true addiction is gambling; he started betting on himself in races, and eventually went slithering to Cobra to pay his debts.
