Scorn

Scorn is a Dinobot from the Age of Extinction portion of the live-action film series continuity family.

Illusion never changed into something real.

Scorn is what happens when you combine a destructive war machine with a predator. Nothing else so much as a destroyer on two legs, he's strong and massive. Not only capable of using his Spinosaurus alternate mode in combat, Scorn is also a demolitions specialist and wields the Scrapmaker Sword in 'bot mode. His massive size makes him almost impossible to bring down.

He also goes by the nickname Spike.

This one's for you, Jurassic Park III haters!

Scorn was trapped aboard Lockdown's vessel until Optimus Prime and the Autobots stole the section of the ship he was imprisoned on, though Optimus did not reveal the Dinobots' presence to his men until the time came for reinforcements. Optimus offered an ultimatum: stand with the Autobots against their mysterious Creators and Galvatron's Decepticons, or face death at his hands. Grimlock submitted to his command when beaten in single combat by the Autobot leader, there by earning his respect, and Scorn and the other Dinobots followed suit. Scorn allowed Crosshairs to ride him into the Hong Kong battle, where Scorn's massive size and lethal sail-spikes proved a great asset in turning the tide. Scorn accompanied the group to try to escort the Seed to safety, but Lockdown returned and turned his tractor beam on them. Scorn would've been recaptured by the bounty hunter had Optimus not destroyed the tractor beam. Scorn helped defend the Seed on a bridge with the other Autobots and Dinobots until Optimus was able to defeat Lockdown. The battle over, Optimus gave the Dinobots their freedom, and Scorn parted with Crosshairs on good terms, who even gave him a new nickname, "Spike". Age of Extinction

How to Ride a Dinobot! comic

Scorn was minding his own business in a Chinese forest, when suddenly Optimus Prime and his Autobots arrived, intent on learning how to ride the mighty Dinobots into battle. When Crosshairs attempted to learn how to battle atop his mighty steed alongside Drift, Scorn and Slug found smashing Crosshairs and Drift together much more enjoyable than dueling. When the Autobots queried Prime on why he wasn't doing the activities, he claimed he had mastered it already...only to be dragged along when Grimlock caught the scent of Decepticons! Scorn allowed Crosshairs to saddle him as the rest of the Autobots and Dinobots followed their leaders into battle. How to Ride a Dinobot!

Scorn features a basic transformation from a mechanical Spinosaurus into a robot. Squeezing his legs together in robot mode rotates the center of his torso, whipping his tail forward in a "Tail Whip!" attack, as well as giving him a new robot-mode head. Funky.

The Takara Lost Age version of the toy, sold as Battle Attack Scorn, features different paint applications, making his beast mode mainly silver.

Part of the first wave of Age of Extinction-themed Generations Deluxe class toys, Scorn transforms from a robot into a red Spinosaurus (albeit with a single sail, seemingly indicating the triple-sailed design was a late change to the movie character). His sword can be stored inside his tail, but he can only hold it in his right hand in robot mode, as his left arm converts from his tail into a lance. Scorn's transformation scheme is extremely familiar, yesss.

The Takara Lost Age version of the toy uses a darker shade of red plastic, replaces the orange paint apps with gold, and features a painted blade for his sword.

Redecoed from the Age of Extinction Deluxe Class figure, Scorn sports a vaguely screen-accurate gray color scheme, with heavy use of chrome and transparent plastic. He comes packaged with similarly-themed redecoes of Grimlock, Slug, Strafe and Slog

His Dino head in the stock photos is hilariously upside down.

A redeco of Generations Scorn, this time in a predominantly black colour scheme with orange highlights, presumably representative of the mainly dark gray appearance of the Dinobots in the movie. Black Knight Scorn is a Takara exclusive to Edion and Bic Camera.

The centerpiece of the "Scorn Street Chase" set, Kre-O Scorn is a buildable dino-beast. (No, he has no alternate robot build.) His head has a small magnet in the roof of his mouth that allows him to "bite" and carry ferrous metal items, like the crest of the new Vehicon helmets, or the 2x2 circular plate that makes up the Vehicons' backpacks. He has movable (non-firing) cannons on each hip, plus he has exposed studs on his back to allow a Kreon to ride him. He features no Spinosaurus sails.

Unfortunately, Scorn has some construction issues. His tail is extremely lightweight, providing virtually no counterbalance to his front half if you want to have him in a pose that doesn't basically have him standing vertical. His knees are simple clip-and-bar affairs that do not have enough "grip" to hold onto any real weight. When built as shown in the instructions, the jointing is awkward and leaves him with few non-tail-dragging poses. However, building his legs as shown in the promotional photography, omitting the 1x2 plates with the small slope, gives him knees that bend backwards and do a much better job of supporting his weight when standing in a natural horizontal-body pose.

The set also comes with Kreons of Crosshairs and two Vehicons, plus a simple banner with "Hong Kong" in Chinese (and technically Japanese too).

• Scorn (Custom Kreon, 2014)

Part of the 3rd wave of the Custom Kreon Age of Extinction Collection, this Custom Kreon Scorn is based on his Age of Extinction counterpart. Like his wave mates, he saw limited release in Hasbro Asia.

Scorn is part of the second wave of Dinobots. Scorn can transform from a Spinosaurus with two sails on its back into a robot. In dinosaur mode, Scorn is the right size to be ridden by the smaller 'Dinobot Rider' toys in this line.

Like all Construct-Bots Dinobots, Scorn features a gear-driven gimmick. In Scorn's case, spinning a gear on his back causes his sails to lunge forward for some sort of attack.

His nominal Dinobot Rider Partner is Crosshairs.

The Last Knight

• Scorn (Voyager, 2017)

The Last Knight Scorn is a new Voyager-sized mold that transforms into a robot to Spinosaurus. Unlike the Deluxe Class figure, he finally has movie-accurate 3 sails on his back.

Notes

• Scorn is by far the largest Dinobot appearing in the film, given his status as a Spinosaurus, which is infamous (thanks to Jurassic Park III) for being a much larger predator than Tyrannosaurus rex. Scorn seems to take the role of being the largest Dinobot from Sludge, who traditionally fills the bill in most incarnations of the Dinobots.
• Incidentally, a little more than two months after Age of Extinction hit the theater, additional fossils of Spinosaurus were unveiled to the public. The new reconstruction depicts an animal with an even larger dorsal sail and incredibly short hindlegs. This makes Scorn's alternate mode an outdated depiction of Spinosaurus, which is a pity, considering that he was the most scientifically accurate Dinobot to appear in the movie before this revelation.
  • Interestingly, this is also a trait that Scorn shares with G1 Sludge. It's a conspiracy, I tell you!
• In later concept drawings, Scorn was planned to have used his spines as small projectiles.
• Scorn's Deluxe class package photo depicts an early version of Scorn. This version's dino-mode head seems to split down the middle to form a slightly wider hand. Although it does leave an unsightly gap in the head.
