The Combicons are Decepticon guinea pigs from the IDW portion of the Generation 1 continuity family.

The Decepticon team known as the Combicons represented an early attempt to create a viable combiner. By all accounts, it didn't work out.

IDW Generation 1 continuity

After the death of Nexus Prime and Nova Prime's ill-fated Monstructor project, various groups continued to search for the secret behind gestalt technology. The Crucible During the Great War, the Decepticons experimented on five of their troops in the hopes of giving them combining capability.
