The Generation 1 franchise encompasses many types of fiction, but none have been as prolific as its various comic-book series. They include:

Marvel Comics

Marvel Comics continuity

• The Transformers (Marvel US) #1-80 (1984–1991) — The original Transformers comic book series, published in the 1980s and later reprinted by Titan Books and IDW Publishing. It also spawned mutually-contradictory sequel series under the Generation 2 and Classics franchises and IDW's Regeneration One. Primarily written by Bob Budiansky, before Simon Furman took over with issue #56.
• "The Night the Transformers Saved Christmas" (1985, published in Woman's Day magazine)
• G.I. Joe and the Transformers (1986)
• The Transformers: Headmasters (1987) — the first Transformers miniseries, introducing the Headmaster characters before their story continued in the main comic starting with issue #38.
• The Transformers Universe (1986) — a miniseries with character profiles. Continued as backup material in the main comic.

Meanwhile, their British branch, Marvel UK, also published Transformers comics, a mix of reprinted strips from the US series (occasionally slightly edited or recontextualized) and original strips primarily written by the aforementioned Simon Furman:

• The Transformers (Marvel UK) #1-332
• Transformers Annual 1985-1987, 1989-1992 — a yearly series of hardback books with a mix of new comics, reprinted comics, text stories and features.
• Transformers Collected Comics (1985-1994) — a companion series, reprinting entire stories from the main Marvel UK run (hence the name), in many ways a precursor of the modern trade paperback. They were published on a semi-regular basis, usually as Summer or Winter specials.

Other Generation 1-based Marvel series

• Transformers: The Movie — a three-issue adaptation of The Transformers: The Movie
• New Avengers/Transformers a crossover series with the IDW Generation 1 continuity version of the Transformers.

Dreamwave Productions

Dreamwave Generation One continuity

Several miniseries and an ongoing series published by Dreamwave Productions. Several series were cut short with Dreamwave's bankruptcy.

• Transformers: The War Within #1-6 (2002-2003)
  • Transformers: War Within: The Dark Ages #1-6 (2003-2004)
  • Transformers: War Within: The Age of Wrath #1-3 (2004, #4-6 unpublished)
• Transformers: Micromasters #1-4
• Transformers: More than Meets the Eye #1-8 (2003) — a miniseries with character profiles, in the vein of Marvel's The Transformers Universe

Other Generation 1-based Dreamwave series

• Transformers/G.I. Joe (2004) — Dreamwave's own Generation 1 / G.I. Joe crossover, cut short during its second miniseries by bankruptcy.

IDW Publishing

IDW Generation 1 continuity (2005–2018)

IDW published a robust series of ongoings, miniseries, one-shots and crossovers throughout the thirteen-year span of their original Generation 1-based continuity, which later grew to include other Hasbro-owned properties. A full list can be seen at IDW Publishing § G1 rebooted, but the major series included:

• The "-ations" (2005-2009) — Simon Furman returned to reboot the Transformers continuity with a series of miniseries; The Transformers: Infiltration #0-6, The Transformers: Stormbringer #1-4, The Transformers: Escalation #1-6, The Transformers: Devastation #1-6, a number of The Transformers: Spotlight one-shots, culminating in the "Revelation" arc, and The Transformers: Maximum Dinobots.
• The Transformers: Megatron Origin #1-4 (2007)
• The Transformers: All Hail Megatron #1-16 (2008-2009) — A "soft reboot" of the IDW universe under the controversial pen of Shane McCarthy
• The Transformers (IDW vol. 1) #1-31 (2009-2011) — Mike Costa writing a "post-war" scenario where the Transformers were initially largely trapped on Earth post-All Hail Megatron for lack of resources.
  • Spin-offs during this period included The Transformers: Bumblebee #1-4 (2009-2010), The Transformers: Ironhide #1-4 (2010), The Transformers: Drift #1-4 (2010), The Transformers: Infestation #1-2 (2011) and The Transformers: Heart of Darkness #1-4 (2011); the last two of which, by Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning, set up the final arc of the Costa ongoing, leading into another "soft reboot" of sorts.
• The Transformers: Last Stand of the Wreckers #1-5 (2010)
  • The Transformers: Sins of the Wreckers #1-5 (2015-2016)
  • Transformers: Requiem of the Wreckers (2018)
• Transformers: The Death of Optimus Prime (2011) — A one-shot co-written by John Barber and James Roberts, setting up the new status quo for the books which followed, with Cybertron once more inhabitable
  • The Transformers: Robots in Disguise #1-34 & Annual 2012 (2012-2014); The Transformers (IDW vol. 2) #35-57 (2014-2016) & Revolution; and Optimus Prime #1-25 (2016-2018) — John Barber's series spinning out of The Death of Optimus Prime, initially set on the revitalized Cybertron before moving to Earth
  • The Transformers: More than Meets the Eye #1-57, Annual 2012 & Revolution (2012-2016); and The Transformers: Lost Light #1-25 (2016-2018), — James Roberts' series spinning out of The Death of Optimus Prime, featuring Rodimus leading a motley crew of Autobots and occasional others on a quixotic quest for the Knights of Cybertron and the kerfuffles they get into along the way.
  • Dark Cybertron (2013–2014) — A crossover event between Robots in Disguise and More than Meets the Eye, plus two one-shots to open and close the event.
  • The Transformers: Windblade vol. 1 #1-4 (2014), vol. 2 #1-7 (2015), The Transformers: Combiner Hunters #1 (2015), The Transformers: Till All Are One #1-12, Revolution, Annual 2017 — Mairghread Scott continues the story on Cybertron.
  • Revolution — A crossover event folding in other Hasbro properties to the universe
• The Transformers: Autocracy #1-12 (digital, 2012), The Transformers: Monstrosity #1-12 (digital, 2013)/#1-4 (print, 2013), The Transformers: Primacy #1-4 (print, 2014) — Tales set during the early war, by writers Chris Metzen and Flint Dille and artist Livio Ramondelli.
• The Transformers: Punishment #1-5 (2014)
  • The Transformers: Redemption (2015)
  • The Transformers: Salvation (2017)
• Transformers: Unicron #0-6 (2018) — Written by John Barber as the conclusion to the universe,

IDW rebooted continuity (2019–)

Having launched Unicron by stating it would be the conclusion of their ongoing Transformers universe, in December 2018 IDW announced a new continuity to replace it

• The Transformers (IDW vol. 3) #1-??? (2019-) — A twice-monthly series, initially written by Brian Ruckley and illustrated by Angel Hernandez & Ron Joseph, set on Cybertron at the beginning of the war.

Other Generation 1-based IDW series

• Transformers: The Animated Movie (2006) A four-issue adaptation of the original Transformers film, 1986's The Transformers: The Movie; marks the film's 20th anniversary and new DVD release.
• Hearts of Steel (2006) — Places the Generation 1 Transformers in the American West during the Industrial Revolution.
  • Infestation 2 (2012) — The sequel to Infestation. This time, it's Lovecraftian demons that invade the various licensed properties. The Transformers-specific issues take place in the Hearts of Steel universe.
  • The X-Files: Conspiracy (2014) — Another multi-brand crossover, this time involving The X-Files series, whose Transformers-specific issue takes place in the present day of the Hearts of Steel universe.
  • In 2017, a version of the Hearts of Steel story was retroactively folded into the main IDW universe via Revolutionaries; the first two stories listed here are also canon in the ongoing G1 continuity.
• The Transformers: Regeneration One (2012–2014) — A limited series set in the main Marvel Comics continuity that continues on from the final issue of the Marvel's original Transformers series 21 years later, ignoring the events of both of the Marvel UK material and the Generation 2 comics.
• Mars Attacks: The Transformers (2013) One-shot crossover comic with the trading card franchise.
• Transformers vs. G.I. Joe (2014–2017) — Crossover maxi-series set in a separate continuity.
• Transformers: Bumblebee - Win If You Dare & Transformers: Bumblebee - Go For the Gold (2018) — A graphic novel and one-shot comic book prequel set in a version of the Generation 1 cartoon continuity.

• Star Trek vs. Transformers (2018–2019) — Five-issue limited crossover series featuring the cast of Star Trek's 1974 animated series.

Other publishers

Blackthorne Publishing

• Transformers in 3-D (1987) — The very short-lived Blackthorne Publishing series printed in stereoscopic 3D.

Devil's Due Press

As the then-current comic licence holders for G.I. Joe, Devil's Due published four miniseries (initially through Image Comics, later independently)
