The tiny alien creatures known as skitters are silicophagous detritivores from the A'ovan homeworld, able to survive and thrive on metallic worlds such as Cybertron by dint of their unique diet.

When the A'ovan abandoned their planet, several skitters stowed away on their escape craft. When the refugee ships stopped off at Cybertron, the skitters took to the life on the metallic planet, with the Cybertronians allowed them to remain in their spaceports on account of their ravaged homeworld and harmless nature. When Rubble first met Wheeljack, the newborn pointed out one such creature on the engineer's foot who cheerily explained what it was and sent it on its way before returning Rubble's attention to the glory of engineering.
