- The Aerospace Extermination Squadron is an army of Drones in the Dreamwave portion of the Generation 1 continuity family. They are also known as Air Warriors.
Clones in comics? Never a bad idea!
The War Within
After a space bridge incident involving himself and Optimus Prime, Megatron was gone from Cybertron for thousands of years. When he did return, he was aided by a massive army of mindless drones (bearing physical resembalance to the War Within Seekers), which he used to quickly dominate Cybertron. After capturing Cybertron, the drones policed the Autobot slaves.
Shockwave was tasked with reverse-engineering the drones, but Megatron rufused to disclose where the drones came from. In truth, Megatron received these drones from the Quintessons having apprently forgotten that he had started the war to fight against Quintessons who had infiltrated the Council of Ancients.
A team Autobots who evaded capture also managed to capture a drone (which displayed the ability to summon additional armaments) for Perceptor to perform a scientific analysis on.
Eventually, the Aerospace Extermination Squadron was defeated when Optimus Prime returned to Cybertron. We're not sure how.
Modern Era
After being blasted into space, and recovered by Wreck-Gar, Megatron, claiming to be the good guy, tricked the Junkion into assembling a small force consisting of three repaired members of the Extermination Squadron.
The three drones aided Megatron in his recruit of the Predacons on Planet Beest. On Cybertron, one was destroyed in an early stage of Megatron's recruitment of Shockwave's remaining army.
Why did the three repaired drones have robot modes similar to the Seeker's earth robot modes? This was possibly a natural growth to adapt to Earth, as Blitzwing experienced in the Micromasters comic.
Notes
Dreamwave's closure resulted in the premature cancellation of The War Within: The Age of Wrath.
