Duck Diver

Duck Diver is a Beastformer from the Beastformers portion of the Generation 1 continuity family.

He's a semi-aquatic egg-laying mammal of ACTION!

Always with a big smile on his bill, Duck Diver (ダックダイバー Dakkudaibā) is quick with a joke, and even quicker with a pun or ten once he gets a little drinky-drinky. Despite his young age, he has become Emperor of Lapaul, and his good cheer has made him very popular among its people.

Not that he takes his job lightly. He is exceptionally skilled at underwater exploration, with love for the sea and its mysteries, and he isn't afraid to dive into unknown waters. It helps that his MVP Weapon, the Aqua Barrier (アクアバリア Akua Baria) can envelop him in a pressurized bubble, letting him safely explore even the most crushing depths. He's even more effective when assisted by King Koala Gray: with Koala's incredible hearing acting as sonar, he can relay information to Diver for speedier exploration.

Part of the third series of Takara's Beastformers toys, Duck Diver is an anthropomorphic platypus (not a duck!) in brown robotic armor. His left hand is posed at a flat-palmed flipper. The rubsign on his chest reveals one of three symbols; Fire, Water or Wood.

He came in a green-grid generic "Cybertron Beastformer" box, with a bio card with a line-art character image first used in Hasbro's Battle Beasts cast poster (rather than the painted images of the prior two series). Depending on the "Pack" he came in, there was a chance of his bio card being replaced with a rare "Secret Photo", "Bewitching Serpent Seal", or "VS Holography Mirror" card.

Re-released in the Transformers-less Beastformers sequel series, Duck Diver was given a straight re-release with new packaging and a new, more filled-out bio card with corrected coloring. This new card also gave his weapon, now branded an "MVP Weapon", the name "Aqua Barrier".

The initial early releases of this series had the chance for any Beastformer to have the rare Burstsun symbol; we'll probably never know if Duck Diver was ever actually one of them. Later in the run, the "mood ring" styled rubsigns were replaced with new rubsigns that revealed full-color Fire/Wood/Water images on black backdrops. (These rubsign variants also happened at the same time in the Hasbro Battle Beast version of the line.)

Notes

• Duck Diver's 1987 art incorrectly gives him a gold-colored weapon. His retouched 1988 bio card corrects this error, as well as a few other minor coloring errors.
• Said 1988 bio card gives him the nickname... uh... "Daddy" (ダディー Dadī). No, we have no idea why. Obscure Japanese pop-culture reference? Who knows.
