Transformers Overgear

Transformers Overgear (トランスフォーマー OVERGEAR (オーバーギア) Toransufōmā Ōbāgia) is a toyline released under TakaraTomy's collector-oriented T-SPARK label. Intended as a spiritual successor to Binaltech, it features toys designed around a more complex, tactical, and industrial "real mecha design" compared to most previous Transformers toylines. Unlike Binaltech, Overgear does not feature licensed vehicles, but aims to create realistic alternate modes that are often loosely inspired by real-life models. This realism also extends to the weapons of the line.

Core gimmicks of the line include a focus on the idea of "disguise and concealment", modable weaponry, advanced wrist artiuclation, and a plethora of 5mm and 3mm compatible ports for equipping figures with various pieces of weaponry and equipment - allowing them to enter an eponymous "OVERGEAR" state.

Fiction

Similar to Binaltech, the story of Overgear is told through pack-in material with the toys. Specifically, they come with documents that detail the story and background in a classified dossier-like format, with specification sheets that list weapon, vehicle, and character details in a blueprint-like style. Each figure also comes with a paper folder for storing these documents.

The setting of the story involves the Decepticons having infiltrated human society via the use of Pretender technology, taking control of key corporations, government intelligence networks, militaries, and other organizations (such as the Global Order Authority). Operating in the shadows, the Decepticons are exploiting humanity for their own gain. In response, the Autobot Resistance was formed as a covert coalition between the Autobots and humans aware of the Transformers, with the Autobots taking on the disguise of private security vehicles. As the underdogs in the fight, the Autobots rely on captured and reverse-engineered Decepticon weaponry.

Notes

• Overgear originated from the idea of reviving the "real-life vehicle series", which developed into the idea of unlicensed real mecha combat vehicles, with a desire from the designers to create fresh takes on characters. The concept of redesigning Transformers with a tactical design garnered a positive reaction within the department, and snowballed from there into Overgear. With an emphasis on the "robots in disguise" slogan influencing the story direction.
• Overgear figures were designed with the idea in mind that when Transformers scan Earth vehicles, they're not only scanning the exterior but also the internal structure as well, and so that is reflected in the robot mode detail. Following on from this, the figures were designed so that the equipment of the alternate mode is also available in robot mode, acting as physical and sensory extensions of the Transformer's body.
• The designs of Overgear figures are made with a varying balance between recognizability/individual personality and a more fresh tactical approach. For example, Ironhide was designed more on the "retaining the core personality of the character" side, whereas Blackout skews more in the "bold new direction" side.
