You weren't there, man. You don't know.
The Great War is a historical event in the Animated continuity family.

In the distant past, Autobots and Decepticons battled for supremacy of Cybertron in a conflict known as the Great War.

Many millions of years ago, war raged between the forces of the heroic Autobots and the brutal Decepticons for control of the planet Cybertron. The Autobots battled valiantly in the name of honor—their courageous exploits bringing hope and glory to a beleaguered war-torn planet, and inspiring countless generations of robots yet to come on-line.

Arcee served in the Great War as an Autobot intelligence officer. Also present was Ratchet, while Prowl actively avoided it. The Thrill of the Hunt Five Servos Of Doom

The war was won for the Autobots when they sent the AllSpark through a Space bridge to a corner of the galaxy where it wouldn't be found. The Decepticons were defeated, but not destroyed. Millions of years later, Ratchet, then a veteran of the Great War, had a cynical attitude regarding history vids on the subject. He recounted how the war ended. Transform and Roll Out

Trivia

Since the histories of Animated and Generation 1 are mutually exclusive (one created by the AllSpark, the other by Quintessons--and that's just for starters), one should not assume that these history clips imply that Animated is somehow a sequel to G1. Rather, the Animated archival footage depicts past Animated characters and events that, by pure happenstance, visually resemble some characters and events from G1.
